Slade Farm Organics

Slade Farm Organics We are a family farm in south Wales. Slade Farm has been tenanted by the Davies family since 1976.

Slade Farm Organics nestles on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast – an area of outstanding beauty – supplying the finest selection of Organic Welsh Beef, Lamb and Pork. The animals are reared organically with the utmost care to promote a degree of excellence not possible with mass production farming. Peter and Rosamund Davies converted the farm to Organic production in 2000 and the wildlife benefit has been substantial resulting in the winning of both Environmental and Taste awards.

Rain or shine, the planting doesn't stop! 🌤 Last week we were getting more sweetcorn into the ground.

Swipe through the gallery to see the process:
1️⃣ Broadforking: Loosening up the soil (and getting a great workout) before a quick rake over.
2️⃣ Dibbing: Poking out the perfect grid of holes.
3️⃣ Planting: Tucking the young sweetcorn plants into bed.

Fun fact: Sweetcorn is actually wind-pollinated. To make sure every cob gets fully pollinated and packed with kernels, you want to plant them in tight blocks rather than straight lines. We squeeze ours together at a 20cm spacing—any closer and they'd compete for room, but this is the sweet spot!

The herb garden is blooming, buzzing, and rocketing!

The chives and sage are in full flower, the bees are humming up a storm, and the fennel is officially winning the height competition against our grower Jenny!

Summer energy is definitely arriving on the farm.

🌱 GROWER'S NOTES (Save this for later!):
Want to recreate this busy bee haven at home? Here is how we spaced these hardy perennials to let them thrive:

Sage: Give it room! We space ours about 45cm apart so it can bush out into a permanent, woody perennial shrub.

Chives: Plant in clumps about 20–25cm apart. They’ll die back in winter and burst right back with these gorgeous edible purple heads every spring.

Herb Fennel: Plant it at the back of the border (about 50cm spacing). It shoots up like a rocket and will easily touch 5–6 feet tall by summer!

The polytunnels are officially filling up! Our tomato plants are now in the ground, while over in the propagation tunnel, the basil seedlings are getting a good soak to help them handle this hot bank holiday weekend.

☀️🌿 In a few weeks, these little basil seedlings will be planted out right between the tomatoes. They make the perfect companion plants both in the soil and on the plate!

Enjoy the sunshine, everyone.
