Brighton Energy Co-operative

Brighton Energy Co-operative Community-Owned Renewable Energy in Brighton & Hove. BRIGHTON ENERGY CO-OPERATIVE aims to stimulate renewable energy in Brighton.

With peak oil and climate change looming, renewable energy is the power of the future. We have a choice: to take ownership of that power as a community or simply to leave the benefit to the private sector. Co-op membership is open to anyone - come to our meeting to discover how to get involved in our pioneering £350,000 Brighton solar installation. As the UK's first solar co-op - and hot on the h

eels of electing the country’s first Green MP - here’s another chance for Brighton to make eco-history.

We had a fantastic morning with Y9 top set at Seahaven Academy yesterday. What a lovely group of polite and engaged students! An invitation to return has already been given so we’re looking forward to running more of our free Renewable Energy & Carbon Footprint workshops for the other classes this Summer.

Woodingdean Primary are welcoming us back this morning for the 3rd year running! Thanks Woodingdeanps!

Our Solar Education Programme is paid for by our community Fund.

If you’d like us to visit your school email [email protected] to book.

Maybe we should report Feb & Mar generation together! February was a disaster: 28% darker than normal! Hence, you have to go back to Feb 2021 to find a worse one. BEC generated 117MWh which is only just enough to get a Tesla up Ditchling Beacon. But that's still equivalent to over 1,400 trees planted and March is already brighter, so we think we'll make up for all this gloom soon.

It's and we're running 11 free Renewable Energy & Carbon Footprint Workshops in local Primary and Secondary schools!

Look out for us at Seahaven Academy, Balfour Primary School, Brighton, Woodingdeanps, Carden Primary PTA.

Pupils learn how electricity is made from the various resources and why each method creates a different carbon footprint on the Earth. It's fun STEM learning via solar car building and racing.

March and April dates are already fully booked, but if you'd like us to visit your school between 6-10 July email us now at [email protected]

Our friends at Worthing CREW are holding a Drop-in session on 'Energy Worthing' next Tues 10th March 11am - 12.30pm. They'll be discussing solar & energy saving, plus the idea of setting up an Energy Company for Worthing, to generate locally produced clean energy for the benefit of local businesses and residents.

All welcome, free admission. At the Community Hub, New Pavilion, Beachhouse Park, Lyndhurst Road, Worthing, BN11 2DB.

We've already given free solar to Worthing's Splashpoint Leisure Centre and hope to fund more large scale community solar projects in the area. OUr free Renewable Energy & Carbon Footprint workshops are also being promoted to local schools via the Worthing Crew network.

Fascinating! 🌞 Our trip to Corrie Energy Partners to see their solar tracking system that delivers up to 30% more electricity per solar panel was an eye opener 👁️

Corrie Energy’s dedicated R&D site, The Old Farm Shop near Abingdon in Oxfordshire, includes both fixed and tracking solar installations. Since 2021, it has served as a laboratory for testing, validating and refining Corrie’s tracker technology.

Our Story

As a social enterprise, Brighton Energy Coop is all about community investment in renewable energy.

It’s a simple idea: basically everyone puts in a bit of cash and collectively we us this to build big solar energy systems. Money from selling this solar electricity gets distributed back to members, and to our community fund.

We have hundreds of members from in and out of the Brighton area – together we’ve already built more than £3m of community-funded solar PV.
