Our mates Tobias and Clive of showing us Kalette and Rhubarb production in the Peterborough Fens, a famously agricultural and fertile region.

Working with Bedlam is a snippet of the future of agriculture in our view. Organic, high quality production at a scale where efficiency truly dialled in. They supply us with a great range of produce throughout the year and constantly working on new and exciting trials. 🪴

Demand for regenerative and organic produce is exceeding supply. The mechanisms for a more sustainable and healthy future all exist. It purely rests at the feet of those in power to legislate what we all know is right, ideologically, economically and pragmatically. 💸

We stand with farmers, in all stages of progression, ready to work alongside them in a massively positive and progressive transition. 🚜

"Supplier trips have always been a keystone to Shrubs bridge between farmers and businesses. A sure fire way to capture the emotion and substance of what we try to communicate on a daily basis through traditional communications. But there is no substitute to the smell of earth, leaves, fruit, getting your hands on the tree or in the ground. There is nothing esoteric about our human connection to the natural world. We are the natural world. And while our minds may have forgotten this to a greater extent thanks to the advent of the tech-revolution, our senses have not. " 🍋

The year of the cabbage it seems! 🥬 And appropriately so in our view... In recent history these brassicas noble crowns have been maligned and made fun of. Treated like a second class veg for old codgers, noses turned up at them when used in anything other than a coleslaw.

BUT NO MORE. Cabbages are varied and beautiful. They're as much a percussion instrument as onions and tatties. Cabbages have huge amounts of savoury umami potential, can be silky and crunchy at the same time and comport themselves to any cuisine from around the world, interchangeably. 🗺️

They're also bloody cost effective. By weight you get a huge amount of food. Don't be wasting those bigger outer leaves either. Don't let some fool tell you they're "tough" or "bitter" which one hears so often about offcuts of food which is totally baseless yet we all maintain the conspiracy!

Anyway... Stoked to hear a vegetable is gaining such traction!

Cupids arrows... Squeaking shafts of seasonal seductiveness. Our forced rhubarb is grown by the venerable in repurposed apple storage sheds.

Crowns are established over a minimum of two years, fed with manure, out in the fields. They're then "lifted" and organised into rows in the pitch black sheds. This "forces" the rhubarb in the same way a chicory is forced or blanched. It's striking pigment remains due to the lack of chlorophyll production and presence of anthocyanin because of the lack of UV light .

The result is a balanced, tart but not bitter, stunning shaft of something uniquely English.

We're all feeling the pinch - so how do we convince you that what you buy from Shrub is BETTER VALUE than what you can get anywhere else, short of buying direct from the farm gate (which we whole heartedly endorse)?

As we've improved service and reliability of produce (yeh yeh we hear some of you scoffing...), it's easy to forget, we're NOT A NORMAL WHOLESALER despite the miraculous way in which we operate. When you're buying from us, you're not just buying produce. You're INVESTING in a system that is forcing a better way.

Of the 65 farms we work with, we send our own vans and drivers out to collect this produce from 60 of them. This is not normal. Lack of routes to market has been one of the biggest challenges for small scale growers and transport is within that. We do away with this bottle-neck by taking on the responsibility ourselves.

Prior to even making a collection however is months of meticulous planning, meetings and forecast schedules with farms and chefs. We do not go to market to fill gaps, which forces us to innovate but costs us missed sales but is vital to our integrity and commitment. This is a standard we hold ourselves to for you, and for our growers.
Seasonal volatility can put paid to all of the above and that's just the way the cookie crumbles. We spread that risk with a critical mass of suppliers. NOT compromise.

So yes, we are a few % higher priced in places - but you are receiving value far in excess of this price. We have lots of competition, but no peers, other than direct supply farms.

So in times like these, do we innovate or do we compromise? That's up to you. We’ll be here with our choice.

A week on since the and we're still carrying the energy from it. What special event!

To engage and impart with our own panel felt incredibly humbling and positive with a superb crowd (including a few celebs!). Huge thanks to Be, Hugo and Calixta for being such wealths of knowledge and wisdom.

Sitting in with Geetie, Peter and Sheila was also hugely convivial and solutions oriented as well as inspiring. You can watch that panel again via the ORFC website and youtube.

The opportunity to answer questions and talk with so many that are marching in the same direction is what makes ORFC such an important date in the progressive grower and food supply businesses calendar. Lets now all go and do the work, with more friends, refreshed conviction and ambition.

So here we are on the eve of a new year.

As the land rests, Shrub plots... 2025 has been an intense and humbling year. The last 12 months has taught us more than the combined 5 years and we'll be taking that momentum forward into 2026!

Our game is not of rapid growth or big investor decks. Our ambition is strength, resilience, legacy and integrity. Those virtues are earned so the game is conduct, ownership and action.

We're honoured and fortunate to have customers cut from the same cloth and suppliers who toil at the cold face to do the work needed for a better future. We're in it together, for the long run. And thats unique.

Wishing you all the utmost happiness, success and adventure for 2026!

Thank you for being part of it xx

Thats us done for Christmas. Back before new year briefly!

This game is as much about people as it is produce and planet.

Whatever the motive, we're surround by some bloody brilliant people. Some fleeting, some come, some go, some more to meet and some you wish you hadn't met but nonetheless adds to life's richness.

From all of us at Shrub, we hope you're spending your Christmas with your people, and thanks to all of you that make what we do such a joy.

Happy Christmas. xx
