🌱 SAME FIELDS. VERY DIFFERENT VIEW. ☀️

May ➡️ August.

Back in May, the farm was a sea of green. The grass was growing, the pastures were lush and there was plenty for the cattle and sheep to graze.

Fast forward to now and it’s quite a different picture. After such a long, hot and exceptionally dry summer, those same fields are brown, dry and desperately in need of some sustained rainfall.

It’s a stark reminder of just how much farming is shaped by the weather — particularly when you’re farming with nature and relying on grass to feed your livestock.

We’ve had a few welcome downpours recently, but the ground still has a lot of recovering to do. 🌧️🌱

Hopefully, with cooler days and a little more rain, we’ll soon start to see some green returning to the fields. 🤞🏼

Our last batch of chicks has now been put out on to the pasture - they’ll enjoy roaming freely, pecking, scratching and foraging just as nature intended.

Follow along and watch their journey out on the pasture as they’re guarded and protected from predators around the clock. 🐶

This weekend marked another little seasonal milestone on the farm 🐓🌱

Our final batch of young chickens made the move from the warmth of the brooder out onto fresh pasture — the last of this year’s poultry to make that transition.

We’ve raised five batches of chickens this season, all spending their days outside on pasture, with fresh grass beneath their feet and plenty of space to peck, scratch and forage as chickens naturally do.

Making this possible are our four Maremma guardian dogs, who live alongside the poultry and help keep them safe from predators. They’re an invaluable part of the farm, allowing us to raise our birds outdoors, on pasture, in the way we believe they should be.

Scenes from around the farm this week 🌱

After weeks of dry weather, those few heavy downpours we’ve had have been a very welcome sight. The fields have finally had a much-needed drink and, with slightly cooler weather on the way, we’re hoping to see a little more green returning to the pastures soon. 🌧️🌱

There’s still a long way to go before the ground has had the moisture it really needs, but every drop makes a difference.

Meanwhile, the hedgerows are telling us that late summer is well and truly here - they’re absolutely laden with blackberries, providing a brilliant natural food source for birds, insects and other wildlife across the farm. 🫐🐦
