❌❌❌🌿 EU REGULATIONS MAKE SELLING SUPPLEMENTS HARD: IS IT HARMING THE NATURAL MEDICINE MARKET? 🌿❌❌❌

Over the past year, many small herbal producers — including us here at New Forest Botanicals— have been affected by new rules around what can legally be sold as a food or supplement.

One surprising example is Turkey Tail mushroom (Trametes versicolor) — a gentle, well-studied fungus that’s been used safely around the world for centuries. In countries such as Japan and South Korea, Turkey Tail extracts are prescribed alongside medical treatments and valued for their immune-supportive properties.

But here in the UK, Turkey Tail is now officially listed as a “novel food.”
That means the authorities consider it not to have been eaten “to a significant degree” before 1997 — and so it can’t legally be sold as a supplement or food without going through a lengthy, costly approval process.

We completely understand the need for safety and consistency in the health market — but these rules also make life extremely difficult for small herbal makers and restrict public access to traditional plant and fungal remedies that have been trusted for generations.

For now, we are following the law to the letter and only sell Turkey Tail marked *NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.
We want to be transparent about why — not because we doubt its safety or its history, but because this is the current legal framework we must work within.

Natural medicine deserves proper recognition and fair regulation — not red tape that only large corporations can afford to navigate. 🌿

We completely disagree with this and can't help feeling that big pharma maybe pulling the strings behind the scenes. There's countless peer reviewed studies out there on the benefits of turkey tail mushrooms.

We’ll keep doing what we do best: crafting honest, small-batch herbal products, and sharing knowledge freely so that our community can stay connected to the healing power of nature. 💚

Fantastic fungi. The complex ecosystem and relationship between fungi and trees is fascinating and we're still learning so much!

🌿✨ OLD MAN’S BEARD — A FOREST HEALER ✨🌿

Out in the damp quiet of the woods, hanging from birch and oak like threads of pale silver, you’ll sometimes spot Usnea, or Old Man’s Beard. It looks delicate — but it’s one of the oldest and toughest life forms on Earth.

Usnea isn’t actually a plant. It’s a lichen — a partnership between fungus and algae that’s been thriving for millions of years. There are numerous different species of usnea and lichens more widely. They’re slow-growing, sensitive, and only live where the air is clean. In other words, they’re the forest’s sign of good health. 🌲

💚 What Makes Usnea Special

We’ve been working with Usnea here at New Forest Botanicals, exploring its reputation as one of nature’s quiet antibiotics.

The science is still young, but the early findings are fascinating — compounds like usnic acid show antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and immune-supportive potential. Herbalists have long turned to Usnea for:

🌿 soothing sore throats and chest infections
🌿 calming skin irritations and wounds
🌿 supporting the immune system through the colder months
🌿 As a potent antibiotic which doesn't harm your immune system as conventional medicines can.

It’s gentle, clever medicine — balancing, not blasting.

⚠️ A Note on Respect & Harvesting

Usnea grows incredibly slowly — sometimes just a centimetre a year — and many lichens are protected species. We never take it from living trees. Only windfallen branches, gathered sparingly from private woodlands which is used in our tinctures.

If you forage, please tread lightly. Take only what’s freely given by the forest and check local laws🌳

🌎 The Bigger Picture

Lichens are quiet survivors — they’ve seen the rise and fall of entire ecosystems. Their chemistry and resilience hold lessons we’re only beginning to understand. It feels right that modern herbalism is rediscovering them now, as we look for more natural, sustainable ways to heal.

💜❤️Hawthorn – Nature’s Heart Keeper ❤️💜

(And yes, there’s still time to harvest… but be quick!)

Hello all,
It’s that beautiful time of year when the hedgerows are bursting with bright red hawthorn berries, and we’ve been out gathering them here in the New Forest before the birds get there first! We always forage responsibly, leaving half for wildlife. We're lucky to have elder & Hawthorne hedgerows on land we look after, providing us with natural medicine.

If you’re lucky enough to live near a good hedgerow, you might still spot clusters of crimson berries glowing through the leaves. They’re at their best right now – just softening, sweet and full of goodness. But don’t hang about; a few more frosts and they’ll be gone.

❤️💜A little about this humble heart helper💜❤️
Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) has long been known as a friend to the heart– both physically and emotionally. Herbalists have used it for centuries to strengthen and tone the heart muscle, support healthy circulation, and help ease anxiety or grief. It’s one of those rare plants that truly supports the “heart” on every level.

Modern studies have even backed up what our ancestors already knew: hawthorn can help regulate blood pressure, improve blood flow, and support the cardiovascular system as we age. It’s gentle, safe, and incredibly effective when used regularly.

A few little-known facts:❤️💜

* Hawthorn is part of the rose family – those tiny white spring blossoms are actually miniature wild roses.
* In old folklore, hawthorn trees were believed to guard the boundary between worlds – never cut one down unless you wanted trouble from the fair folk!
* The berries, flowers, and leaves are all medicinal. The berries for the heart, the flowers for the spirit, and the leaves for gentle support year-round.

🍒Our favourite hawthorn syrup recipe:🍒
This syrup is delicious, deeply nourishing, and makes a lovely daily tonic for heart health and circulation. It's perfect for the winter months.

You’ll need:

* 2 cups of fresh hawthorn berries (or 1 cup dried)
* 3 cups of water
* Honey (to taste – around 1 cup works well)
* Optional: a slice of fresh ginger or a pinch of cinnamon for warmth

1. Rinse your berries, remove any stems, and pop them into a saucepan with the water.
2. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 30–40 minutes, until the berries start to soften and the liquid turns a deep red.
3. Mash the berries gently with a spoon, then strain through muslin or a fine sieve.
4. Return the liquid to the pan, add your honey, and warm just enough to dissolve it (don’t boil).
5. Pour into clean bottles and store in the fridge.

Take a spoonful daily, drizzle it over porridge or yogurt, or stir it into warm water for a cosy autumn drink.

We’ve been making a few batches here at New Forest Botanicals, and the whole place smells like autumn in a bottle – sweet, earthy, and full of heart.

So, if you fancy making your own this season, now’s the moment! Grab your basket, wrap up warm, and head out for those last berries while they’re still shining red in the hedgerows.

Nature really does give us everything we need – we just have to catch it in time.

Happy foraging! 🧺

“A Cure for Everything but Death”

📜The story of Nigella sativa – the humble black seed with a mighty reputation.📜

🌰If there was ever a little seed that carried the weight of legend, it’s this one. Known as black seed, black cumin, or kalonji, Nigella sativa has been treasured for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians loved it so much they buried it with their Pharaohs – jars of black seed oil were even found in Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Across the world, it’s been called Habbatul Barakah – the Seed of Blessing – and it’s easy to see why. Herbalists and healers have turned to it for generations for all sorts of ailments, earning it that famous saying:
“A cure for everything but death.”

So, what makes it so special?
Black seed is a true all-rounder:

🔥 Calms inflammation throughout the body
💪Strengthens the immune system
♥️ Supports healthy heart and blood pressure
😷 Helps with coughs, allergies, and asthma
🪮Nourishes skin and hair
🫄Soothes digestion and bloating

It’s a seed that just seems to help everything work a little better.

👇How to use it

Seeds – sprinkle on bread, soups, or salads for a warm, nutty flavour.
Powder – mix into honey or smoothies.
Oil – take by the spoon (in moderation) or use on skin and scalp.

📜A little history closer to home
Black seed likely arrived in the UK around the 1600s, brought over through trade with India and the Middle East. British herbalists soon caught on – using it for coughs, colds, and sluggish digestion. In Victorian times, it was listed as a “carminative tonic” – a fancy way of saying “good for the gut and the spirits.”

After a quiet spell, it’s having a well-earned comeback. Herbalists, nutritionists, and anyone interested in natural wellness are rediscovering what our ancestors already knew: this seed is small, but mighty.

There’s an old saying attributed to the Prophet Muhammad :
“Use the black seed, for it is a cure for every disease except death.”

🔥🔥Fire Cider — Warming, Clearing, Strengthening🔥🔥

As the cold sets in and the damp creeps closer, there’s nothing quite like a daily spoonful of fire cider to keep the body moving and the blood warm. It’s one of those old remedies that has stood the test of time — simple, strong, and alive with goodness.

Our fire cider is made with raw, whole ingredients, locally grown where possible: onions, garlic, cloves, turmeric, mullein leaf, cayenne pepper, black pepper, chilli peppers, wasabi, grapefruit, lemons, cinnamon, and apple cider vinegar with the mother. Nothing dried, nothing diluted — just the real thing, steeped and alive.

Taken through the winter months, fire cider helps stimulate circulation, clear congestion, and strengthen the immune system. The vinegar base supports digestion and gut health, while the combination of roots, citrus, and spice works to keep pathogens at bay.
Mullein clears the chest and helps to expel mucus.
Garlic and onion bring natural antibacterial and antiviral action. Turmeric and black pepper work together to reduce inflammation and ease stiff joints. The heat from the chillies and cayenne gets the blood flowing, helping to break up sluggishness and cold in the body. Grapefruit and lemon bring vitamin C and gentle cleansing for the liver and lymph.

It’s a real tonic for resilience — a way to support yourself through the long, cold months without relying on anything fancy. Just the plants doing what they do best.

🔥How to Make It Yourself🔥
Chop everything up — whatever you have works, leave or add as you wish: roughly equal parts roots, citrus, garlic, mullein leaf and a selection of spices. Pack it into a clean jar, cover completely with raw apple cider vinegar (with the mother), and seal it. Give it a shake whenever you remember. Let it steep for 4 to 8 weeks, then strain it through a cloth.

Bottle it up and keep it close. Take a tablespoon a day through winter — neat, or diluted in warm water with a little honey.
Give your immune system the boost it needs this winter. Ours will be available from November.
