Why does fish from a fishmonger taste so different?

It’s not just your imagination.

From how long the fish has been sitting around, to how it’s stored, prepared and sourced, there can be a huge difference between supermarket fish and fish from a traditional fishmonger.

At Gastro Nicks, fresh fish arrives regularly from Brixham and is prepared in-house, meaning you can choose exactly what you want and get advice on the best way to cook it too.

Good fish should smell fresh, cook beautifully and actually taste of the sea — not just look nice in plastic packaging.

The secret to a really good picnic

A proper picnic isn’t just about sandwiches and crisps. It’s about slowing down, eating well, finding a lovely spot and sharing good food with good company.

We’ve put together some simple ideas to help make your next picnic feel a little more special - from easy crowd-pleasers and deli favourites to the little details that make all the difference.

And if you’d rather skip the prep, Gastro Nicks can help with that too.

Preparing a meal doesn’t have to be complicated to feel like a treat

Some fresh bread or tasty crackers, some proper cheese, a few slices of charcuterie, olives, maybe something marinated in oil.

Ten minutes, no cooking, and suddenly it feels different.

That’s the beauty of a good deli - you don’t need a recipe, just a few really good ingredients.
