We see a number of comments on our posts from people who expect food sold direct from farms to cost less than food they buy in supermarkets.

Food sold direct from farms can be cheaper, more expensive, or a similar price to the same sort of food sold in supermarkets.

People sometimes think there are less costs for farmers when they sell direct and then assume that prices charged by farmers include a big profit margin. However this is not the case.

If a farmer rears beef cattle on his farm, the costs of rearing those animals on the farm - feed, vet bills, labour, machinery and fuel, will be similar whether the animals are to be sold direct from the farm or into the supermarket supply chain.

I’m sure a lot of people understand that there are additional costs associated with turning a live animal into joints, steaks, burgers and packs of mince and delivering it to a supermarket. The roads are full of trucks running this food round the country.

But many think farmers selling direct only have the costs of keeping and rearing animals on the farm and the rest is profit. This is not the case.

A farmer that wants to sell finished animals as meat in boxes delivered to local households, in an honesty shop on the farm, or through their own butchery counter, will incur all of the costs that are included in selling through the supermarket supply chain.

These include:
- Slaughter at an approved abattoir
- Transport to and from the abattoir
- Butchery (on farm or elsewhere)
Construction and maintenance of butchery and chilled storage facilities in farm
- Environmental health regulations and inspections
- Packaging
- Wages for staff (butchery, packing, distribution
- Marketing and promotion
- Electricity
- Delivery vehicle running costs

In the case of farmers selling direct, the first aim is to cover the costs of producing, processing, packaging and selling the food. And of course they will aim to make a margin/profit on the sale. Otherwise why would they bother?

When you buy directly from farmers you are paying what the food really costs and what it’s truly worth. When you buy from supermarkets, you are often buying food at a price that is lower than the costs of production on farm, as farmers’ margins are squeezed by the big players above them in the supply chain. This model is unsustainable!

Please think about the true value of the food you buy. Make time to learn what really determines its quality and how it is produced. You will taste the difference!

Hello! Sorry I've not been posting or delivering for so long, life has been a bit hectic!
The good news is, I've just restocked the freezers and will have a price list very soon! Watch this space :)
And yes, delivery before Christmas will be possible.
We've a few new products, Porkberry sausages made with hedgerow jam, collar and middle bacon, (oh and all the bacon and gammon is dry cured now!), collar gammon (OMG!), and all the usuals including gammon steaks and sausagemeat.
Just working out prices and putting together meat packs, will publish shortly :)
Oh, and first one to guess the photo location gets a free pack of steaks 🤣
