I'm sharing this information to highlight some of the issues around the difficulties of trying to produce food in an ethical and ecconomical way. I rear and breed animals for food. My animals have a good life and deserve a pain, stress free death. I am unable to kill pigs at home for human consumption as I am not trained or qualified to do so, I also do not have the necessary facillities to process the meat.
The nearest abattoir that will take my special pigs is over an hour away and that is in danger of closing, not because they are short of business but because the ability of the current site to be brought up to the neccesary building standards, the difficulty in recruiting and retaining staff and the increasing running costs make it unviable. I personally believe there is a need for smaller, local abattoirs where animals are treated well by experienced people and the miles travelled from field to fork is dramatically reduced. Once lost, this facillity will be gone forever.
