The New Leaf Co-op

The New Leaf Co-op Edinburgh's friendly wholefoods workers co-operative

We focus on products that are fresh, local, organic, low packaging at a reasonable price and we're very proud of our jam-packed co-op shop.

Perhaps our most popular feature is our grind your own nut butter machine... our customers go nuts for it. We offer almond on Monday (Almon-day) Cashew on Tuesday (that's Cashews-day) and peanut butter throughout the rest of the week, with a short break for

**Chocolate Hazelnut Butter** on Saturdays and **Chocolate Peanut Butter Happy Hour** on Sunday afternoon!

You can help yourself to our wide range of tasty scoop-your-own ingredients and snacks: there's more than 50 to choose from! We also offer more than 100 loose herbs and spices (the best value in town!) and a whole host of refillable cleaning products for body and home.

You'll find a wide range of fresh ingredients from local suppliers, with deliveries from four local organic vegetable suppliers throughout the week, and three different bakeries- our bread is a local fave! We aim to support a thriving local economy and keep food miles down.

We offer eco-friendly packaging where possible, and customers are encouraged to save money and waste by bringing their own packaging from home, and are rewarded a 10p discount for each 500g+ purchase when they do.

As a co-operative, our six worker-members all take equal responsibility in running the business. We aim to pay ourselves a living wage, and further profits are channelled back into the business and toward seeding new community-run projects.

Well well well. It's been a long time coming but our new website is here!

We've been working with the lovely Pete from Urwin Studio to make our vision come to life. ๐ŸŒฑ And what a transformation!

You can now read all about our dear shop; the stories of the products on our shelves, about our co-op, our ethics, and our community. You can compare prices with your local supermarket ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ or browse our funky new map ๐Ÿ“ to see just how far your food travels (it's local, folks!)

We hope you enjoy a wee browse and getting to know us a little more deeply. Don't be a stranger ๐Ÿ’˜ Connect to our newsletter, or check back for ongoing news and events. Extra points to those who share with a friend ๐Ÿ˜‰ and keep the good wholefoods word spreading.

Plum party! ๐ŸŽ‰ ๐Ÿ’œ We've had our first delivery of the year from our dear friends Danny and Erica at Tyninghame orchard!

These early season organic plums are the Santus Hubertus variety, named after Saint Hubert, who was actually the saint of hunting. Might rework that as gentle fruit picking..?

This first drop marks the start of plums a'plenty ๐Ÿ™Œ PLUS first of the season discovery apples in approx 3 weeks folks. You have been warned. ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ Happy times ahead!

PS - top marks to Danny for the tee ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿƒ Co-operatives & Young Leadership ๐Ÿƒ

In March of this year, CALP (Climate Action Leadership Programme) reached out and asked if someone from our team of co-directors would like to speak at one of their workshop events. It was an honour to be asked, and one of our co-directors Chiara went along to represent the New Leaf on CALP's 'young trustees' panel.

CALP is organised by 2050 Climate Group, a wonderful charity that empowers young people to take action against the climate crisis. The CALP programme equips young leaders to do just this, at no cost to the participants.๐Ÿ’š

Although we don't work directly in the space of climate activism, this work is central to our co-op in many ways. Our constitution at the New Leaf grounds itself in principles of environmental justice- our eleven aims include: respect for the environment by reducing packaging, rejecting unsustainable food systems through our supply chains and producers, and reducing food miles by supporting local producers.

This panel specifically was a 'young trustees' panel, where attendees were able to ask the panelists about their experience in leadership roles at their organisations/companies, especially considering that these roles are often dominated by a particular demographic (generally, white men over the age of 50).

Whilst the New Leaf doesn't have trustees, it was great to be included in this as a parallel example, and be a voice for worker's co-operatives. We are proud to have a diverse team running the business, particularly when it comes to women, non-binary folk, and q***r folk. We also have a younger than average leadership team, and this diversity makes for a great range of perspective on our team. ๐Ÿ

It was a really empowering experience to sit besides other young people holding leadership roles and actively making a difference in their communities. Thank you CALP for having us, to the other panelists, John and Daisy, and to our lovely panel moderator. ๐ŸŒฑ

Customer Feature Post ๐Ÿ”Ž Meet our long time customers, Melanie and Miguel! ๐Ÿ‘‹

They lived all over the world before settling in Edinburgh more than 23 years ago. They are strong advocates of mutual aid and workers co-ops, and were some of the key people to offer financial support to the New Leaf during its inception nearly 14 years ago. ๐Ÿ’š

Have you spotted the vintage San Francisco poster in the background? ๐Ÿšฒ Melanie and Miguel gifted this to the New Leaf in the very early days, and it has been a proud part of our Leafy Home ever since. Miguel and his friends started the Critical Mass bike rides in London after having been influenced by the movement in San Francisco.

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Having now retired from working with the NHS, Miguel remains an avid campaigner for nuclear disarmament. He is active in , , and Donโ€™t Bank on the Bomb Scotland, a campaign for divestment from investment in nuclear weapons. He invites all to join the campaign: nukedivestmentscotland.org and to check out the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN): icanw.org Miguel is also a songwriter and musician. His band, can be found on Bandcamp. They are also available for gigs ๐Ÿ˜‰

Melanie has worked in colleges and universities supporting children and adults with Specific Learning Difficulties and Autism, retiring in 2024. She also continues to be socially and politically involved, with her main focus being her volunteer work with (CAAT). She is fiercely passionate about abolishing the arms trade, which is at the root of the death, destruction, displacement and horror that millions are experiencing today. She encourages those who would like to learn more or to get involved with CAAT to email: [email protected] or [email protected].

Melanie has recently joined the , aligning with their approach to the climate, inequality, human rights, and particularly their clear and active stance against the arms trade and the genocide that Israel continues to enact against the Palestinian people.

Thank you Melanie and Miguel for your ongoing support, for having your photo taken, and for sharing your important work with us! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ

Miles for MAP: Jamieโ€™s Fundraiser for Palestine ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Dropping in with a guest feature from our lovely Jamie- passing over to him now :)

Hey folks! Iโ€™m Jamie and Iโ€™ve been working at The New Leaf since 2022. Itโ€™s been a wonderful work place over the years, with so much loving energy poured into the shop every day by our team and our customers. ๐Ÿซถ

One of my main roles at the co-op is being on the โ€˜bulk teamโ€™ (see photos) where I take a surprising amount of enjoyment in getting all our refill products topped up for the days ahead. Hopefully you too can appreciate the beauty of a recently refilled pinhead oatmeal ๐Ÿซก

When not running up and down the stairs at New Leaf carrying bulk feeders, you may catch me running around the Meadows or the wider city. I took up running last year to give myself some structure and purpose in a challenging time both personally and globally. I quickly decided to sign up for the 2026 Edinburgh Marathon, aiming to raise funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) while doing so.

It is with much gratitude in my heart that my work at New Leaf aligns with this cause, from the firm boycott of Israeli goods laid out in our ethical buying policy to our fundraiser day last September where we were able to raise ยฃ2,213 for MAP.

With every step, I will hold others in my mind, those who are in such desperate need of support. If you would like to read more about why I want to run for MAP, or if you may have a few pounds to donate - please see my fundraiser page here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/jamieemf?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CL&utm_campaign=020

Thank you for taking the time to read and considering donating. If you have any questions or would prefer to make a cash donation, please donโ€™t hesitate to catch me for a chat in the shop. Iโ€™m in most Mondays and Thursdays.

With love and solidarity, Jamie x

Time to ditch 84,000 bags*? ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

We've been chatting with customers recently and have been interested to learn how many of you think we EXPECT you to take a paper bag - especially when shopping for fruit and veg. The reality couldn't be further from the truth! ๐ŸŒ

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ This Spring we've been conducting an ethical buying review, and one thing that's come up for our team is...packaging! Specifically, we've been thinking a lot about our duty as a business to continue challenging the use of packaging in our supply chains.

While bulk selling, compostable packaging options and other low waste solutions are in our blood, we can't ignore the stubborn single use waste we see every day. If we as staff get lost in the day-to-day shop flow and don't carve out time to question ourselves and our suppliers- will things ever change?

While we continue to offer paper bags for free, we are increasingly wondering how best to push ourselves to make lasting, impactful changes where we can. ๐Ÿค”

Packaging is complex. It turns our paper bags aren't really 'better' than plastic. They use a huge amount of energy to produce, and are in the main, a single use item. โŒ

While we continue to reflect, we encourage our community to observe your habits when it comes to bags. Are we going to judge you for taking a bag - absolutely not! However we don't want to shy away from shared accountability. We have to change a habit to create change.

If you're looking for a good place to start- some fruit and veg come with their own, self-made packaging! So let those bananas, garlic, and and oranges roam free baby! For other items, we've got reusable cotton bags for purchase, or you can bring any bag you fancy.

At this moment in time, we'll continue to offer our free paper bags, small charge compostable bags, and free jar/home products refill exchange.

Hope to see you soon โœŒ๏ธ

*Our customers (& team) have got through 84,000 paper bags in the last 12 months, the majority of which are single use.

We got such a lovely response to our first customer feature post back in October- now itโ€™s time for another! With such a diversity of folk coming through our doors every day, itโ€™s great being able to share some of their stories and reinforce our web of community ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿง’โ€๐Ÿง’

๐Ÿ”Ž Customer Feature Post No. 2- say hi to Denis!

Denis makes a dedicated pilgrimage from Dundee to Edinburgh each month in order to support the Zapatista movement. The New Leaf is the only place he has found that regularly stock Zapatistaโ€™s coffee.

The Zapatistas are a far-left, indigenous-led political movement in Mexico that formed in 1983 as a resistance to neoliberal reform, land privatization and the marginalization of indigenous communities in Chiapas. โœŠ

They have succeeded in building autonomous municipalities with their own systems of education, healthcare, justice, and governance. These systems are all rooted in principles of libertarian socialism and radical democracy, and they function via regular community assemblies ๐Ÿ“ข

Denisโ€™ passion doesnโ€™t stop with buying the Zapatista coffee here at New Leaf- he has also made the journey to the Chiapas to visit the Zapatistas themselves! And to this day he continues to be committed to their cause ๐Ÿ’ซ

If you would like to support the Zapatistas, you can find their locally grown coffee at our shop. Thank you Denis for being happy to have your photo taken and New Leaf story shared! We look forward to seeing you when you next make the journey ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿค

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ SHOP CLOSED ON MONDAY APRIL 6TH ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

Hey folks- weโ€™ve got to close the shop for a day to carry out some essential work on our ceiling in our small (some might say cosy) office!

Monday is one of our quietest days so weโ€™ve tried to have as minimal an impact as possible on our customers ๐Ÿซถ

Good news is, weโ€™re open all other days despite the Easter holidays! So if you need anything last minute this weekend, weโ€™re open 9-7 on Friday, and 9:30-5pm both Saturday and Sunday ๐Ÿฃ

Thanks for understanding, and happy Easter to those who celebrate!

๐ŸŒฟ New Leaf Community Meal, Feb 7th 2026 ๐ŸŒฟ

Our first community meal was a delight and a success- forty humans and two dogs gathered for a night of eating, storytelling, and even a little singing โœจ

Thank you to all our volunteer cooks for making a range of delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes- we enjoyed food from Palestine to Spain to Senegal, surrounded by neighbours, friends, and colleagues.

It was particularly lovely to hear the personal stories and connections that inspired each person to make their dish. Also, our suspicions that folk who shop at New Leaf are good cooks have all been confirmed ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿค

Second thank you to our lovely leaves Hannah and Sandra for their hard work and initiative in organising this event, and the German Speaking Congregation for opening up their beautiful space to us.

It's been many moons since we had a community meal like this, and we now hope to plan many more. The intention is to have about four gatherings per year, so keep an eye out on our social media and in the shop for the Spring edition! ๐ŸŒผ

Last but certainly not least- thank you to Jules () for all these beautiful photos. How lucky to have such a talented photographer and great human as part of our team. Bonus photo of me trying to figure out the settings on Jules' camera after years of the 'ol smartphone special you're used to ๐Ÿ˜…

These are the moments that really remind us how special the New Leaf is to be a part of. Whether you have been with us for 10 years or for 10 days, your company and your custom are so incredibly valued!

Feeling very lucky to be part of this corner of Edinburgh and to see the power of co-operative values and community so embodied โค๏ธ
