Further to yesterday's cake post...

We have had a few messages and comments suggesting favourite cakes you would like to see make a comeback on the stall.

Carrot Cake seems to be top of the list but also mentioned was Sultana & Walnut Cake, now who amongst you remembers that one? If you do that's certainly a good indicator of how long you have journeyed with us!

Today we have Lemon Drizzle and Date & Walnut.

First day of meteorological autumn is marked by a heavy early morning dew here at Springlands…

The kitchen garden continues to provide a nice selection.

As the seasons change and the days grow shorter there will be fewer eggs from our Springlands flock. The recent salmonella issue with imported eggs has inevitably re-focussed attention on the benefits of buying eggs from trusted sources. This has, in turn, led to increasing demand for our eggs.

To try and be fair to everyone we have decided to suspend the sale of eggs by the tray until demand settles down.

Our advice is buy your eggs little and often, that way you are enjoying them at their best.

Here at Springlands this is the time when we start making plans for next year, what to grow in the Kitchen Garden, poultry stocking levels, new lines for the stall...

As part of this we have been considering setting up with a flock of laying ducks, would fresh, free range duck eggs be something you would be interested in?

Please let us know in the comments so we can gauge potential demand and plan accordingly.

Today marks what would have been the 100th birthday of a very good friend of Springlands so we will taking a moment to pause and remember the life force that was Jean Rollinson of Pennington Hall.

Jean was a major character and a huge supporter of ours, we do miss her infectious sense of fun and her indefatigable enthusiasm for life and the countryside.

Now and again she would plan how she was going to mark her 100th birthday, it would always involve a party in the beautiful home she loved and the company of her friends and family.

Sadly it wasn't to be, but here's to you Jean, thanks for everything you did for us and the lovely memories, hope you are enjoying the party up there?

Here at Springlands there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to bring those super-fresh free range eggs to the stall…

We have a number of very important local family run firms that are vital links in our supply chain and top of our hens favourite people list is Robsons Feed Supplies at Clavering.

They ensure that our girls have everything they need to sustain production from top quality layers ration, r**e straw for litter in the houses and nest boxes and oyster grit for good shell quality.

Our hens peck their way through approximately 600kg of feed a month so it’s important that everything runs smoothly, without Robsons things at Springlands would certainly grind to halt.

We are very pleased with our aubergines this year, they have really benefited from going into the raised beds, these rather magnificent specimens were picked but five minutes ago along with some very nice courgettes which are getting into their stride at long last!

Available on the Springlands stall this morning.

A nice fresh feel to the air this morning here at Springlands, a little overnight rain has left a few small puddles and damped down the ubiquitous dust.

The kitchen garden is still producing a good range of lovely fresh vegetables for the stall and the hens are laying very well despite all the recent heat.

Please note that we will be closed for the Bank Holiday on Monday 31st.

Open from 8 til 4 today.

Hoping for a slightly cooler day than yesterday here at Springlands…

We have dug the last of our Charlotte and Nicola Potatoes for this year, they have proven very popular so if you have yet to try them this will be your last chance.

We have courgettes this morning and some French beans too.

For those of you that consume your Springlands super fresh free range eggs by the tray we have medium and large available at the moment, be quick though, they don’t hang about very long!

Don’t forget Springlands is open from 7 this week in an effort to beat the heat!

All the usual goodies and seasonal produce from the kitchen garden.

The flower gardens continue to provide beauty despite the tribulations of summer, the standard Rose ‘Golden Wedding’ and the Begonia ‘Illumination’, that you see as you wander down to the stall, benefiting from the daily attentions of the watering can.

Hopefully next week will see some respite with slightly lower temperatures predicted and who knows some hitherto elusive rain!
