Happy ! 🌍

At McLays, addressing the climate crisis is one of our main priorities. We understand the significant impact that food systems have on the environment and acknowledge our role in contributing to a solution.

We are committed to transitioning towards a Net Zero future, and to support this ambition have recently partnered with the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce’s “Step Up to Net Zero” Programme, working alongside them to create a bespoke action plan to work towards our net zero, circular and waste goals.

🔪🐑 Last week, our Head Butcher Kevin visited Glasgow Clyde College's Langside Campus to demonstrate how a whole lamb is expertly broken down into its cuts.

This session not only gave catering students valuable insight into butchery skills and meat preparation but also showed how every part of the animal can be used to reduce waste and add value in professional kitchens.

For every participant, McLays donated £100 to Brightest Star, a bereavement charity supporting families after the loss of a child.

Sustainability isn’t just about reducing waste – it’s also about how we deliver. At McLays, we’re making our fleet smarter, cleaner, and greener 🚚💚

Here’s how:

✅Efficient Routes: With PodFather software, our vans take the most efficient path, reducing food miles and time spent idling in traffic.

✅Cleaner Fleet: All of our vehicles meet Euro 6 standards, cutting NOx emissions by 80% and particulates by 50%.

✅Fewer Trips: Dual temperature-controlled vans mean we deliver fresh, frozen, and dry goods in one trip, saving miles and emissions.

✅Recognised by ECO Stars: As part of Glasgow City Council’s ECO Stars Fleet Recognition Scheme, we’ve been supported in adopting daily vehicle checks, tracker systems, and driver training to make our fleet more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly.

At McLays, we’re always looking for new ways to make our operations more sustainable 🌍♻️

We recently teamed up with Mil-tek to carry out a full waste audit - and the results speak for themselves:

✨ General waste uplifts cut from 12 bins ➝ 6 per week
✨ Recycling expanded to include cardboard, paper, plastics, and wood (all of which used to end up in general waste)
✨ New compactors mean fewer bin bags = fewer collections = lower emissions on the road 🚛💨
