Also this month it is sourdough September the Real Bread Campaign's annual celebration of genuine sourdough bread and people who make it. The ninth month of the year is when they go on a mission to help everyone discover that life’s sweeter with sourdough!
Launched in 2013, the main aims of Sourdough September are encouraging people to:
* Bake genuine sourdough bread.
* Buy genuine sourdough bread from small, independent bakeries
* Boost the Real Bread Campaign, run by the charity behind Sourdough September.
For 12 months of the year, the Campaign promotes Real Bread in general, with September being a focal point for sourdough in particular. It is also time to shout louder than usual 'say no to sourfaux' to alert people to this problem and help them avoid paying a premium for something that simply isn't the real deal. We can guarantee our sourdough bread is the real deal, baked freshly for us Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday by All Things Nice in Marple.

This is our last box for August as we are about to take our annual holidays. We are open all this week, Saturday 22nd August is our last day, then we will reopen on Tuesday 8th September and deliveries will be back to normal.

We have 2 recipes for you this week, to showcase our new season British courgettes we have included all the fresh ingredients to make our new warm lemony courgette salad, a healthy, vibrant salad of shaved courgette, lemon and basil. Great as a starter, side dish or lunch. If you fancy something a little sweeter, we have included the recipe and enough courgettes to make our famous marrow/courgette cake, call in for a sample and pick up a recipe, a light moist delicious cake and so easy to make, best of all the recipe makes two cakes, great to treat a friend and they freeze beautifully as well.

This weeks lettuce hasn’t had to travel far at all, grown by W R & A K Halman in Cranage Nr Knutsford, we have chosen Red Oak Leaf lettuce. The leaves have a mild, sweet, and nutty flavour with a similar texture to flat/butter lettuce.

Nothing can beat the taste of warm, buttery corn on the cob, it makes a great side dish with fish or chicken. We have fresh corn in both our boxes, we have tried all ways to cook corn, but this one is the best, microwave for about 4 minutes with the husk on. Remove using a tea towel as they will be extremely hot and steamy, let them cool slightly and peel back the husk. The English corn is exceptionally sweet this year.

We have included Spanish Dolcir melon in both our boxes this week, this smooth skinned melon has orange flesh which, is rich in caramel aroma with a delicious sweet taste.

Our £25 box includes new season English aubergines perfect for making Marinated Aubergine, slice 1 large aubergine into 1cm thick rounds. Brush both sides with olive oil and pan fry for approximately 3-4 minutes on both sides until nicely charred. To make the Marinade, Mix together 2–3 tbsp olive oil, 1 minced garlic clove, 1 finely chopped red chilli, Juice of ½ lemon, 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar, a small handful of chopped fresh parsley, Salt & pepper to taste. Then lay the cooled aubergine slices in a shallow dish, Brush both sides with the marinade, then let sit for at least 15–30 minutes (longer for more flavour) Enjoy warm or at room temperature as a side dish, in wraps, salads, or antipasti platters.

This week’s fantastic recipe is orzo with roasted tomatoes. It is so simple, and so delicious, we have been eating it as a side dish with pan fried fresh sea bass, everything cooked from beginning to end in around 30 minutes. If you would like to add sea bass just mention when booking your box. All the ingredients are included in both our £25 and £15 boxes.

French Greengage plums are also included in both boxes, this sweet plum originates from a wild plum originally from Iran and is now grown throughout Europe, many consider this the finest dessert plum available, they have a sweet, honeyed, and syrup-like flesh. Due to difficulty growing there are only small producers worldwide and only a very short growing season, which makes this a very special crop.

Rosetta apples are an early-season British dessert apple variety known for their bright red skin and striking, marbled pink flesh that forms a unique rosette pattern when cut. Developed in Worcestershire in 2005 as a sport of the 'Discovery' variety, they are crisp with a sweet tart, berry-like flavour, they are delicious!!

We also have Helda beans in the boxes this week, a delicious sweet English flat bean, for a delicious side gently steamed the whole bean for approximately 8 minutes, then transfer to a hot grill, turning over when slightly charred (approximately 7 minutes) In a small bowl, mix around 3 tbsp of olive oil, 3 tbsp lemon juice, freshly ground sea salt and pepper. When the beans are charred on both sides transfer them to a serving plate. Add the dressing over them and scatter some fresh mint leaves over the beans, serve immediately and enjoy!

Damson season has arrived

Damsons are small, deep purple and wonderfully tart, a classic British stone fruit, a close relative of the plum, but with a much more intense, sharp and fruity flavour. They are not usually eaten straight from the tree, they come into their own when cooked.

Perfect for damson jam or jelly, baked into a crumble or pie, chutney or one of the most popular damson gin.

Their season is very short, so if you love that unmistakable sweet sharp taste, now is the time to grab them.

Our soup of the week this week is a delicious roasted tomato, this is so easy to make and the best tomato soup we have ever tasted! All the fresh ingredients you will need are included in the £25 and £15 boxes, you will just need to add oil and balsamic vinegar (we can include a small pot of balsamic enough for the recipe 50p) We use Little Doones balsamic vinegar in our recipes, this recipe works well with the original or chilli flavour. Little Doones is a small Scottish company who take great pride in only using fresh produce to flavour their balsamic, which comes from one of the oldest and longest established balsamic houses in the Modena region of Italy.

If you would like to add a bottle to your order you can choose from
original,
chilli,
smoked garlic,
garlic,
ginger,
Gold of Modena - a luscious golden dressing made with white balsamic vinegar, the flavour is almost honeyed but still sharp and light. This dressing works beautifully with sweet or savoury dishes. Try drizzled over strawberries or kiwi fruit or use as an alternative to traditional balsamic vinegar in recipes. £5.75

Victoria plums have arrived probably the best loved British plum, we have included them in both boxes.

Our olive pick of the week are Nocellara del Belice, whole Sicilian olives, naturally vibrant green in colour, these olives have an amazing nutty, buttery taste! £5.00 per pot

Our hummus is probably the best tasting hummus ever, we know that is a bold statement, but our customers are always telling us. £3.30 per pot approx 330g

Our amazing Basil pesto never fails to liven up a meal, made with the freshest ingredients, a combination of fresh basil and parsley, olive oil, cheese, garlic, salt and pepper. It packs a flavourful punch, perfect for tossing with pasta, spreading on sandwiches, adding to soups. £5 per pot
