SCOTTISH CHEESE STORIES 🧀🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

To celebrate Scottish Food & Drink September, we’re shining a light on some of our favourite Scottish cheeses.

First up, our absolute bestseller: Isle of Mull Cheddar.🤩✨

Made by the Reade family near Tobermory, this raw-milk farmhouse cheddar is cloth-bound and matured for at least 12 months.👌

Sharp, tangy and beautifully crumbly, it gets some of its distinctive character from the cows’ diet, which includes spent grain from Tobermory Distillery.🥃

A wonderfully bold Scottish classic... and a firm Cheese Lady favourite.🙌

Have you tried it?🤓

What are those little white specks in a mature cheese? 🧀🔍

We’re tasting Prima Donna Maturo, a delicious Dutch Gouda-style cheese – and if you look closely, you’ll spot tiny protein crystals throughout the paste.🤩

They’re all part of the pleasure of a well-matured cheese, adding that lovely little crunch amongst the rich, savoury flavours. ✨

GUESS WHO’S BACK! 🧀😍🇫🇷 We haven’t had Saint Félicien since last year, so we’re very excited to welcome this little French indulgence back to the counter. 💛

Rich, buttery and beautifully creamy, it starts soft and delicate before becoming gloriously gooey and runny as it ripens. Think gentle mushroomy notes and pure melt-in-the-mouth pleasure. 🤩✨

Add good bread and a glass of wine, and you really don’t need much else. 🥖🥂

Who else has missed it? 🙋‍♀️

Did you know Scotland makes its own beautiful Brie-style cheese? 🧀🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Morangie Brie comes from Tain in the Highlands, with a creamy paste, edible bloomy rind and lovely mushroomy flavours, followed by subtle notes of grass and hay.

And a little tasting tip from us: don’t just taste your cheese — smell it too. So much of what we experience as flavour comes through its aroma. 👃🧀

Feeling that little change in the air? 🍂🥂

As summer starts to soften into autumn, I find myself reaching for whites with a little more richness and warmth.

Morandé Gewürztraminer is just the thing. Fragrant rose and orange blossom, juicy lychee and mandarin, with a lovely touch of gingery spice. 🌹🍊✨

The perfect late-summer white before we surrender to the reds. 😉🍷

The weekend is almost here… which means it might be time to think about the cheeseboard 🧀🍷✨

If you’re having friends over, one of my favourite little serving tips is to cut each cheese into individual portions before it goes onto the board.

It makes everything easier to share, keeps the board looking beautiful, and avoids a lovely wedge being hacked into from every angle 😄🧀

A small detail, but it makes entertaining feel that little bit more relaxed and elegant. Add a few crackers, something fruity and a good bottle of wine… and you’re all set 🍇🍷✨

CHEESE OF THE MONTH 🧀✨ Say hello to our September star — Wyngaard Goat Gouda. 🇳🇱🐐

Smooth, creamy and wonderfully approachable, it has all the sweetness of a classic Gouda with a lighter, more delicate character. Expect notes of walnut, creme fraiche and soft caramel, with none of the strong “goaty” flavour you might expect. 😍

If you love Gouda but fancy discovering something a little different, this is one to try. 💛

Available throughout September in Haddington, North Berwick and online at thecheeselady.co.uk

My favourite way to eat Burrata? For breakfast. 😍🤍

Creamy Burrata, a generous drizzle of chestnut honey and fresh fruit salad. 🍯🍓🍑

Simple, indulgent and an excellent reason to have cheese before 10am. 😉🧀

Would you try Burrata for breakfast? 👇😍

If you haven’t tried Roquefort with Sauternes, you haven’t lived… 🧀🍷

The salty intensity of a great Roquefort with the luscious sweetness of Sauternes is one of those classic pairings that makes both taste even better.

It changed my mind about both blue cheese and sweet wine 20 years ago. Try it with Le Vieux Berger and you might just see why.

DID YOU KNOW? 🤓 Not all blue cheeses use the same blue mould! 🧀💙🤯

Gorgonzola has traditionally been made using Penicillium glaucum, rather than Penicillium roqueforti, the mould commonly associated with many other famous blue cheeses.

It’s one of the reasons Gorgonzola Dolce has such a wonderfully gentle blue character. Think creamy, sweet and buttery, with a soft blue tang rather than a fierce peppery bite. 😍✨

A little cheese science behind one of Italy’s great classics. 🇮🇹🧀
