Honeybees live in the dark therefore communication is based on scent, touch and vibrations. Here, these honeybees are enticing their sisters back to the hive using their Nasonov gland located at the end of the abdomen. The bees raise their rear and expose this # gland to release a pheromone which they disperse by fanning their wings vigorously. What a workout, don’t you think!?

As Amy from Tigsy Blossoms reminded everyone, Sunday is market day. Please bring an umbrella as it looks like it might be raining ☔️ 💦 🌧️🤷‍♀️. Also bring a couple of envelopes if you want to get free pollinator-friendly flower seeds collected from our garden last year!

Noake Mill Honey will be in the grounds of St Mary’s, Hemel Hempstead Old Town, next Sunday 3rd May, from 11am till 3pm.
Our current stock is getting very low but we should have newly extracted honey at our next market stall in June.
Come and say hi and pick up some free, pollinator-friendly flower seeds collected from our garden last year. It would be handy if you could bring a couple of envelopes with you to put them in though.
Finally the weather is warming up!!
The bees are very happy and being their busy normal selves. They have enjoyed plenty of various pollen for many weeks now but had to rely mainly on their honey stores as plant produce little if no nectar below 15 degrees Celsius.

I was asked to give instructions on how to grow your free pollinator-friendly seeds. So, here they are!
Apart from pumpkin seeds that need space due to their size, you can scatter seeds (and dust!) over a tray of compost and cover with a little more compost. Keep warm and moist then transplant into pots as and when the seedlings appear.
Nasturtium seeds can be pushed down 1cm into the ground, with your finger, where you want them to grow as late as June as they grow very quickly.
In any case, don’t put anything outside until the risk of frost has passed.
Please send us pictures of your plants to share your successes!

Here they are! The queen is circled in blue and the drones in red.
The queen has a long abdomen that makes her wings look small.
The drones are stocky with a round bottom (so sting) and huge eyes making it look like they wear a big shiny helmet.

Can you see the queen? There are also drones /male honeybees? How many can you see?

Noake Mill Honey will be at Hemel Old Town Market this Sunday 5th April, 11am-3pm. The Old Town Market is a very friendly market with a varied selection of stalls, lots of different foods to choose from and a great DJ.
Bring a couple of envelopes (or more!) with you to get free flower seeds collected from our garden last year, the ones our honeybees and other pollinators loved to feed on.
Note, in the picture, my little helper putting seeds into envelopes for me.

Honeybees are covered with feather-like hairs that become electrostatically charged during flight allowing them to attract and trap pollen grains. When flying, the honey bee’s hairs become positively charged and attract negatively charged pollen grains on flowers.
These specialised hairs, even covering their eyes, act like a comb to efficiently collect pollen. The bee uses her legs to comb the pollen from her hairs, adds a little nectar and saliva and forms pellets which are then packed into her pollen baskets (corbiculae) on her hind legs. baskets

The Hemel Old Town Market is back, every first Sunday of the month, starting in March.
Yesterday, 1 March, was a rainy and windy day but, at least, set up and tear down were done without the rain. The sun came out very shortly too. There were 45 stalls spread throughout St Mary’s grounds. Great vibes.

Meet the Canarian Black Bee. We found this honeybee in Tenerife foraging on Aloe Vera, Bermuda buttercups and Acokanthera Oblongifolia.
The Acokanthera Oblongifolia is a highly toxic plant containing glycosides. It was used to make arrow poison! They pose a risk to honeybees as the pollen and nectar can carry toxins. And yet, the flowers have an amazing scent similar to jasmine.
As for the Aloe Vera, mine never flowers! Does yours?
