Honeystone - Ingatestone Honey & Beekeeping

Honeystone - Ingatestone Honey & Beekeeping Beekeepers and producers of honey in Ingatestone, Essex, UK. He had always had an interest in bees, whereas I was petrified of them!

Introducing HONEYSTONE! 🍯 🐝

Our love of beekeeping started when I (Hannah) purchased an Urban Beekeeping course in 2017 for Nick's birthday. Two children & a house move later, we then took up an opportunity in 2021 to share a bee hive in our garden in central Ingatestone, with an experienced beekeeper. Unfortunately those bees weren't keen and swarmed. In 2022 we decided to go it alone, and start

ed out with our own bees in our own hive. We had quite a successful season, producing honey that we either consumed ourselves or gifted to others. The expansion to two hives came this year, with happy and content bees that have produced alot of honey. More than we can consume or gift this year! If anyone would love to try a jar then please get in touch.

Nearly six weeks ago we posted to say we said goodbye to some of our bees, so that we could downsize. Our bees had other ideas! From three hives to seven just like that, because they want to multiply and keep their colonies strong. We now need to find homes for four of these hives. 🐝 🐝 🐝 🐝 🐝 🐝 🐝

X3 wooden national hives
X1 poly nuc

Essex Wildlife Trust saves Chester Bees!
by volunteer June Lambert

My Goddaughter, recently, went to a comedy performance at Chester Storyhouse the comedian Jimmy Carr asked people what the most unusual object was they had in their handbag or pocket.

My Goddaughter’s friend who was with her told the comedian that her friend had a bee revival kit. Of course, she owned up to having one. He wanted to know what is was and where she had got it. She explained it was a keyring from Essex Wildlife Trust that she had been given by her Godmother for Christmas, and it contained a solution to give to a bee if it seemed in distress. He asked if she had ever used it, she said that as she came out of her house, she found a distressed bee on the path outside her house. She put the solution down and the bee later flew off. The next question was whether it was a once only fix. She explained it came with a leaflet that explained how to refill the key ring with the correct solution.

πŸ›οΈWhat an incredible story! Great to know products purchased at our Nature Discovery Centres are helping to save pollinators, one bee at a time. Why not pick yours up when visiting over the Easter weekend.

Yesterday we also said goodbye to the small hive of bees that we caught from a swarm last year. They survived the winter and were outgrowing their nuc*. We decided that we don't have the time to devote to another established colony and so another beekeeper has given them a great new home! 🐝 🐝 🐝

* A beehive nuc, short for "nucleus colony," isΒ a small, established bee colony, typically consisting of a queen bee, worker bees, brood (immature bees), and some food stores, housed in a smaller hive box, and used as a starter colony for beekeepers.
