Some new arrivals yesterday afternoon, including salted liquorice, fruit rock balls and Tutti Frutti.

Tutti Frutti are similar to the old Rowntrees Tootie Frooties that were discontinued in 2019, but these have a much bigger and somehow more grown up fruit flavours.

Fruit rock ball bust with all different fruit and citrus flavours clustered together making a slightly chewy centre.

Salted liquorice - single and double.
Strawberry liquorice revolvers.
Sweet liquorice and caramel twists.

Sometimes the most ordinary shop days become the most memorable.

A few years ago, a lady came into the shop for what seemed like a normal visit, but before long she began sharing her memories of coming here many decades ago. What started as a simple conversation became a wonderful glimpse into the history of the shop and the role it has quietly played in people's lives for generations.

As part of Celebrate Kirriemuir Festival, we wanted to share this memory again because it captures exactly why preserving these stories matters so much. Often the most valuable pieces of history are not found in official records, but in the conversations and recollections people carry with them.

Let me introduce you to this amazing young lady called Rachel. She made my year last week when she came to visit the shop. At 92 yrs, she used to frequent the shop in the 1930s and 1940s. She is the only person I have met who would have been served by a member of the original Ferguson family. She had such clear memories of how the shop was, told me of the mini rock sticks made during WW2, how the shop was sometimes closed through lack of ingredients, and confirmed that many would swap their rations and save them up to send star rock to family members fighting in the trenches. I will always remember this wonderful lady now and the absolute joy of her brief visit, and cannot say how precious it was to me for her to share such memories, thank you Rachel 🥰

One of the questions we still hear in the shop is:

"Do you still make the Ginger Wine?"

For many years, our shop produced its own Ginger Wine – known to some customers simply as "Ginger Essence". It was a much-loved local product.

Among the records we have is this fascinating production book, which details batches made between 1987 and 2004. Page after page records ingredients, quantities, alcohol content, production dates and other notes, providing a remarkable glimpse into a tradition that had been part of the shop for generations.

Production came to an end in 2004 following changes in legislation, including the introduction of the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive, which meant the Ginger Wine could no longer be produced in the shop.

Although over twenty years have passed since the last batch was made, it's amazing how often visitors still ask about it.

Do you remember the Ginger Wine?

As part of this year's Celebrate Kirriemuir Festival, we're taking a journey through the remarkable history of our shop.

Throughout the week we'll be sharing a collection of historical photographs, old records, newspaper adverts, memorable occasions, stories of past owners and staff, and fascinating glimpses into how the shop has evolved over the decades.

Having served generations of local families and visitors, the shop holds countless memories. Some of these stories are recorded in photographs and documents, while others live on through the people who remember them.

We'd love you to join in as we uncover and celebrate this small but important part of Kirriemuir's history. Feel free to share your own memories, family stories, photographs, or tales you've been told by parents, grandparents, neighbours, or former employees. Whether the memories are from fifty years ago or last summer, they all help tell the story.

Follow along this week as we open the archives and celebrate the people, events, and traditions that have made the shop such a familiar part of Kirriemuir life.
