Happy Sunday!
It’s all been a bit quiet here at Glenelg Shop HQ on the old social media what with the ongoing hand over transition and brain befuddlement.. but this week is THE big week for us here.. with the community taking over from Saturday 1st November!
We can’t quite believe it’s time and looking over photos from when we moved here ourselves to now, we’ve come a long way.. but enough of that for now.. more of that at the end of the week!
But a heads up that this Thursday 30th and Friday 31st October we will be closing at 1pm for the rest of the day, allowing for stock takes etc. from 1st November normal service resumes!
If you can please let those not on social media know, we would hugely appreciate it!

So to clarify this upcoming weeks opening hours for the shop
Monday 27th - 9am - 12.30pm / 2pm - 5pm
Tuesday 28th - 9am - 12.30pm / 2pm - 5pm
Wednesday 29th - 9am - 12.30pm / 2pm - 5pm
Thursday 30th - 9am - 1pm
Friday 31st - 9am - 1pm
Saturday 1st November- a whole new era begins! ❤️

Don’t forget we are fully stocked as usual with all your needs, wants and didn’t know you wanteds..!

It’s hard to find the words sometimes to express how much gratitude is felt when someone’s generosity of kindness and spirit is shown.
So basically I’ll keep it simple - THANK YOU!
Dunkie turning up with a generator to literally save our bacon (can’t take credit for that) and Sandra working in the dark with a head torch on to make sure all the community had everything they needed during the power cut. Tremendous! and I am hugely grateful as I’m sure everyone who visited the shop on Saturday was!

NEWSPAPER UPDATE - Saturday 30th August

Following our initial post about the reduction in newspapers from 6 days to 2 days - a BIG thanks to the Community Trust who have stepped in and organised a rota of volunteers to hunter gather the newspapers from Monday 1st September - meaning that there will be no break in the daily newspapers.

Its good to work together!

Dont forget - we have daily stocks of fresh fruit, vegetables, bread goodness, meaty treats and all manner of fantabulous essentials and gifts…. Watch out for a new and VERY exciting stock drop next week (if the post is kind to us)
We are thrilled to have two new independent Scottish stockists coming on board.. watch this space!

Hot off the press. Just arrived in the village the 2026 Glenelg and Arnisdale Community Calendar. We want to say thank you to the contributors who helped make this calendar possible. We are currently distributing them to our usual supportive local businesses to sell on our behalf. All funds raised go back into the local community. We have managed to hold the prices to the same as last year, an A4 calendar is £12.00 and the A5 version is £9.00. UK first class mainland postage is £3.50,. International postage can be quoted for depending on destination. Today is a SUPERB day.. A warm welcome to the permanent team of the Glenelg Shop (Sherlock obviously making a not very surreptitious appearance) gently guiding us through this transition with unchallengeable authority! I’m not really supposed to be in a photo but it looked too fun!

You ALL know Sandra (Shop Manager) - nailed on work wife legend, sun worshipper, lover of well fired rolls, coffee, cheese and above all her immaculately kept sheep and Dog Broch ❤️ 20 years at the helm and she knows you better than you know yourself.

Meet Clare (Assistant Manager) - some of you will already recognise and be pals with this stalwart holiday maker who has bid goodbye to the city life, taken the leap and moved to the Glen! Woo Hoo!
Lover of all food, good times, Murdochs coleslaw.. Self de’Clare’d shop swot and altogether top notch gal! She’s a total asset to the shop and the village.

These absolute beauties will be taking the reins of the shop from 1st September and be your go to gals for all things shop related. We cannot thank them enough!

On a more serious and boring note.. a very gentle reminder that we ask that all accounts are settled by shop close this Friday 22nd August. We will also be asking that no items are marked down either. We thank you very much in advance for your understanding, you’re all hugely appreciated!

Anyway.. get yourselves down here and clock the new team, grab a fresh ‘Ruth’s Cafe’ filled roll, wash it down with a delicious beer and then stuff an bar in your mush!

Newspaper Update - w/c 01.09.25

It is with a heavy heart we must announce that from 1st September we will be reducing the newspapers in the shop to Thursdays and Saturdays only.

Why?

As we go through this transition period we are low on physical resource but primarily having looked at the cost versus sales we are left with little option than to reduce the papers to these days only. We have contacted various local couriers, Menzies themselves and the Post Office to see if these could be an option for delivery direct, however all of these companies have confirmed that it is simply not economically viable. The round trip of 19 miles to collect the papers from Shiel bridge is a strain on physical resource, car wear and tear and fuel and with only two members of staff in the shop, we just can’t justify the expenditure.

We have struggled with this for some time ourselves and we simply don’t sell enough papers every day to maintain this - every paper is at a cost.

We understand this may be a blow for a few people in the village and this has not been an easy decision to reach. We very much hope there can be an understanding of why this has had to happen.

As mentioned, we will continue these on Thursdays - we know how much you love the WHFP! And Saturdays and magazines will be with us Thursdays also.
