Anxiety Support: Simple Things You Can Do Every Day
Anxiety can leave you feeling overwhelmed, restless, and constantly on edge. There are simple daily habits that can make a real difference to how you feel.
☀️ Get Some Morning Sunlight
Exposure to natural daylight, especially within the first hour of waking, helps regulate your body’s internal clock and supports healthy mood and sleep patterns. Even 10–20 minutes outside can be beneficial.
🌿 Practice Grounding Techniques
When anxiety starts to take over, grounding can help bring you back to the present moment. Try the 5-4-3-2-1 technique:
* 5 things you can see
* 4 things you can touch
* 3 things you can hear
* 2 things you can smell
* 1 thing you can taste
This simple exercise helps shift your focus away from anxious thoughts and back to your surroundings.
💚 Use Positive Reassurance Statements
One technique I personally use is quietly repeating three simple statements:
“I am safe. I am loved. I am happy.”
When anxiety is high, the brain often becomes stuck in a cycle of fear, scanning for danger and imagining worst-case scenarios. Repeating calming, reassuring statements can help interrupt that cycle and redirect your attention. These phrases encourage feelings of safety, connection, and positivity, helping to calm the nervous system and bring you back to the present moment.
The words themselves are simple, but the act of slowing down, focusing your mind, and repeating them can create a sense of stability when thoughts feel chaotic.
🚶 Move Your Body
Gentle exercise such as walking, yoga, stretching, or gardening can help reduce stress hormones and support emotional wellbeing.
☕ Reduce Caffeine
Caffeine stimulates the nervous system and can worsen symptoms such as a racing heart, jitteriness, and feelings of unease.
🍬 Cut Back on Sugar
Blood sugar highs and lows can affect mood and energy levels, sometimes making anxiety feel worse. Balanced meals can help keep blood sugar more stable.
🍷 Limit Alcohol
Although alcohol may feel relaxing at first, it can disrupt sleep and often leaves people feeling more anxious the following day.
🌱 Herbs Traditionally Used for Nervous System Support
Passiflora (Passionflower)
Traditionally used to support relaxation and calm a busy mind, especially when anxiety is accompanied by racing thoughts.
Avena Sativa (Oat Tops)
A deeply nourishing herb for the nervous system, often used by herbalists to support people experiencing stress, exhaustion, and nervous tension.
Lemon Balm
A gentle, uplifting herb traditionally used to promote calmness, support relaxation, and soothe stress-related digestive discomfort.
Anxiety affects both the mind and body, which is why a holistic approach can be so helpful. Small daily habits, supportive herbs, nourishing foods, movement, and simple practices such as grounding and positive reassurance can all help you build greater resilience and a calmer nervous system over time.
