Here’s a debate for you…

In our house we only eat real butter. No margarine or butter alternatives. When we need a new block we take one out of the fridge, pop it in the butter dish and then it lives on the counter top until it’s finished.

We thought this was normal until we were speaking to someone recently who couldn’t believe we didn’t keep our butter in the fridge all the time.

What do you think?

No wonder people don’t want to use butter if it’s straight out the fridge! It will be impossible to spread.

It’s silage time on the farm at the moment.

We cut grass at this time of year and ferment it to create silage which we feed to our cattle over winter. This is an incredibly important part of our pasture based system ensuring our animals are 100% grass-fed.

The past few years we’ve had incredibly dry periods over May and our silage has been impacted. However, with the rain and mild conditions this year we have a bumper crop.

A beautiful new addition this morning, quietly sitting in the grass.

Our cattle grazing along the coastal path are calving at the moment. Could we ask everyone to ensure their dogs don’t go into the field. We had, what could have been, a dangerous situation last week with a dog.

Even our, incredibly docile, cattle will retaliate when a dog enters the field and there are calves.

Thank you!

🍓 Taste of Fife: Soft Fruit Season 🍓

One of the best things about spending time in Fife at this time of year is enjoying the incredible local produce on our doorstep. 🍓

Fife is famous for its soft fruit, with fields full of strawberries, raspberries and other delicious berries grown right here in the East Neuk and surrounding areas.

If you're staying with us over the summer months, why not pick up some fresh local fruit and treats from some fantastic nearby businesses:

📍Ardross Farm
📍 blacketyside Farm Shop
📍 Easter Grangemuir Farm – including their handy vending machine at the The Road End
📍 cairnie_fruitfarm

Whether you're looking for fresh berries, homemade baking, local produce or a day out, you'll find plenty to enjoy.

Supporting local farms helps keep our rural communities thriving and gives you a real taste of what makes Fife so special.

As well as growing lots of veg for the shop, we’ve also been busy growing herbs. You’ll find the tubs sitting by the front door when you come in.

Always looking for ways to reduce waste and our impact on the world, these herbs are grown in recycled ice cream tubs kindly donated by Shona at LJ’s in Elie.

When you get to the till, just ask for a bunch of coriander, parsley or dill (with more coming soon!) and we’ll cut some fresh for you there and then.

Fresh herbs can completely transform simple cooking and are packed full of flavour and goodness too.

It’s garlic scape time!

Ever wondered what to do with garlic scapes?

These are actually the flower stems from the garlic plant. We need to remove them otherwise the garlic starts putting its energy into going to seed rather than growing a good bulb.

The ones ready just now are from our elephant garlic, so the scapes are straight rather than curly and have a lovely mild garlic flavour

A few easy ways to use them:

• Garlic Scape Pesto
Blend a handful of chopped scapes with olive oil, parmesan, lemon juice and nuts or seeds until smooth. Great stirred through pasta, spread on sandwiches or spooned onto grilled meat.

• Charred Garlic Scapes
Toss with olive oil, salt and pepper then cook on a hot BBQ, griddle or frying pan for a few minutes until softened and slightly charred. Think somewhere between asparagus and spring onions.

• Garlic Scape Butter
Finely chop the scapes and mix into softened butter with sea salt, black pepper and a little lemon zest. Perfect melted over potatoes, veg or a big Ardross steak.
Simple, seasonal and properly tasty.
