Most people assume their laundry detergent is safe — after all, it’s “just soap”… right?
Unfortunately, many mainstream cleaning and laundry products contain hidden chemicals that don’t simply wash away. Residue can remain on clothes, bedding, towels, and soft furnishings, meaning our skin is exposed to these ingredients every single day.
Some commonly used chemicals even have legal exposure limits because of growing health concerns.
For example, certain detergents containing high levels of 1,4-dioxane — a chemical linked to liver and kidney damage and classified as a potential carcinogen — have already faced restrictions in places like New York. Yet many products around the world still contain it within “legal limits.”
What Could Be Hiding in Your Detergent?
Many big-brand detergents may contain:
🛑 Hormone Disruptors (Phthalates) – Often used to help fragrances last longer and linked to hormone and thyroid disruption.
🛑 Carcinogens (1,4-Dioxane & DEA) – Chemicals that have raised ongoing health concerns.
🛑 Optical Brighteners – Added to make fabrics appear brighter, but they can irritate sensitive skin.
🛑 Skin Irritants (DEA & Formaldehyde Releasers) – Ingredients that may contribute to eczema flare-ups, irritation, and sensitivity.
Because detergent stays trapped in fabrics, exposure can happen 24/7 — through clothing, bedding, towels, and even the shampoos and body products we use daily.
Many conventional shampoos can also contain sulphates, synthetic fragrances, silicones, and harsh preservatives that may dry out the scalp, irritate sensitive skin, and add to our overall chemical exposure.
Over time, this may contribute to:
• Skin irritation & sensitivities
• Respiratory discomfort
• Allergies & eczema flare-ups
• Increased toxic load on the body
• Hormonal disruption
• Environmental pollution
