My beautiful daughter Lois accompanied me last night, what a great evening sharing people’s journeys and experiences of Britain’s small businesses.

In what seems a challenging time for small local independent businesses, with pressure on high streets and shopping habits changing its the people that run small independent shops, restaurants and stalls that make a big difference to there communities.

I would like to thank for nominating us for the award for trading on globe town for over 50 years and our family trading in tower hamlets and Hackney council for over 100 years.

Most of all I would like to thank our community and long serving customers 💚💚💚 you make it all worth while.

Unfortunately we did not win our category we was entered for the LEGACY AWARD just being there was a great experience and opportunity to share our story. 💚💚💚 ❤️

The next fantastic family business shortlisted for our 2026 ‘Legacy’ award shortlist is Herbert & Son's.

A fourth-generation family business rooted in honesty, graft, and community, Herbert & Sons is a true East End legacy.

In 1974, Herbert & Sons was formally established, and today the business is run by Marc Herbert at Globe Town Market.

What makes them unique is their commitment and longevity. Globe Town Market once had around 20 thriving stalls, now only Herbert & Sons and a single plant stall remain.

They stand as one of the last guardians of East London street trading heritage, selling fresh fruit and vegetables every week come rain or shine.

Herbert & Sons is more than a stall; it is a lifeline for many and a business that carries history, heart and legacy.

I am pleased to announce that Herbert’s & sons greengrocers have been nominated to attend the best small business awards in Spitalfields 21st of May.

We have been nominated for best family business legacy award contributing to positive impacts for local communities and suppliers of fresh healthy produce for local residents 🙌🏻 a massive thank you to most importantly my customers who have supported us throughout, through every decade from 75 too now shopping habits have definitely changed but we our proud and committed to providing fresh , healthy and seasonal produce with as little plastic waste possible but most of all providing a life line to local residents and families. Men’s mental health club, here is Steve and Kevin who enjoy nothing more than a cup of tea on a Saturday morning and a regular chat. Born and raised in Bethnal Green, East End boys.

I received sad news yesterday from his sister of the sudden passing of Steve (right hand side). Steve retired back in 2018 from the national gallery and since 2019 he has been a regular visitor to my stall helping me set up, tidy up, and keep the kettle on.

Steve helped me all throughout covid 19 period,
He enjoyed the social interaction of the Saturday market chatting to customers as he lived alone and sometimes felt a bit isolated having a routine on a Saturday seemed to really help him with his bipolar condition and mental health.

Life can be taken away very quickly in this busy world we live in.

Health, love and happiness is all you need ❤️

You had a good heart mate and I will miss seeing you on a Saturday and our chats you was a good man.

He loved his art, doctor who,visiting museums and galleries.

He was a character of the local area, and would be down brick lane every Sunday trying to find a bargain. A true cockney boy 💙

Put the kettle on mate

You will be missed.

This is my life ❤️

I will be trading this Saturday for all your pre Christmas fresh supplies.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support and encouragement it means so much and my regular customers who make my Saturdays more special.

Moving forward into the new year I would like to share with you all that I will be continuing to trade on globe town market on a Saturday with more exceptions of having more weekends off to share with my family.

This will consist of school half terms, bank holiday weekends and the 6 week holidays to allow more free time with my children and wife.

I will keep all my regular customers up to date with my plans moving forward on a Saturday but I feel more free weekends will benefit me and my family , spending more time together with the people I love the most.

All my customers mean a lot to me and I will continue to source and bring you fresh fruit & veg on a Saturdays ( with more free time available to myself ) I hope everyone understands as always thank you for your continued support and encouragement it means a lot.
