Could kimchi bacteria help the body deal with nanoplastics?

Interesting new research from the World Institute of Kimchi in South Korea has looked at a specific beneficial bacterium isolated from kimchi, Leuconostoc mesenteroides CBA3656.

Researchers found that the bacterium was able to physically bind to nanoplastic particles under laboratory conditions.

Even more interestingly, when tested in mice, the bacteria were associated with significantly increased excretion of nanoplastics in their faeces.

The theory is that certain bacteria may be able to attach themselves to plastic particles within the digestive tract, potentially helping carry them through the gut for elimination.

However, this does NOT mean that eating kimchi has been proven to remove microplastics from the human body. The research involved a specific bacterial strain and animal studies, and human research is still needed.

It is nevertheless a fascinating new area of research into fermented foods, our gut bacteria and the way microorganisms interact with environmental pollutants.

What makes Klamath Blue-Green Algae so interesting?

Klamath Blue-Green Algae (AFA) is a naturally nutrient-rich freshwater algae traditionally harvested from Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon.

Autumn Skin: Why Does Skin Feel Different When the Weather Changes?

As temperatures fall, cooler air, lower humidity and indoor heating can leave skin feeling drier, tighter or more sensitive.

Eat the Colours of Autumn

Autumn brings an abundance of colourful seasonal foods — pumpkin, squash, beetroot, apples, pears, mushrooms, carrots, cabbage and berries.

But those beautiful colours aren't just there to make our plates look good. Different plant foods provide different combinations of fibre, vitamins, minerals and naturally occurring plant compounds.

Orange – Pumpkin, squash & carrots
Rich in carotenoids such as beta-carotene, which the body can convert into vitamin A. Vitamin A contributes to normal immune function and the maintenance of normal skin and vision.

Red & purple – Beetroot, red cabbage & berries
Their rich colours come from naturally occurring plant pigments and polyphenols, including anthocyanins. These plant compounds continue to be widely studied for their role within a balanced diet.

Green – Cabbage & leafy vegetables
Provide fibre alongside a range of vitamins, minerals and naturally occurring plant compounds.

White & brown – Mushrooms
Mushrooms bring another type of plant food to the plate and can provide nutrients including B vitamins. Some varieties are also a source of vitamin D when exposed to UV light.

Apples & pears

CAPSULES OR POWDER — WHICH IS BETTER?

When it comes to supplements, one question we’re often asked is: “Is it better to take a supplement as a capsule or a powder?”

The answer is that there isn’t one option that suits everyone. The best choice can depend on the supplement itself, the serving size, personal preference and what fits most easily into your daily routine.

CAPSULES

• Convenient and easy to take
• No measuring or mixing required
• Practical when you’re on the go
• Usually have little or no taste
• Useful if you prefer not to mix supplements into food or drinks

POWDERS

• Can be practical for larger serving sizes
• Easy to mix into water, smoothies or other drinks
• May offer more flexibility with serving sizes, depending on the product
• A useful alternative for people who find capsules difficult to swallow

SO, IS ONE BETTER THAN THE OTHER?

Not necessarily. Capsules aren’t automatically better than powders, and powders aren’t automatically better than capsules.

COCOA & HEALTH: WHAT DOES THE SCIENCE SAY?

Cocoa is naturally rich in plant compounds called flavanols, which have been widely studied for their potential role in health.

One of the strongest areas of research is blood vessel function. Cocoa flavanols have been studied for their effects on normal blood vessel dilation and blood flow.

Research has also explored cocoa flavanols in relation to:

• Cardiovascular health
• Blood pressure and circulation
• Metabolic health
• Brain health and cognition

The findings are interesting, but not all studies have shown benefits. For example, the large COSMOS trial did not find a significant reduction in total cardiovascular events, while a separate COSMOS study found no overall cognitive benefit from cocoa extract. This is why it is important not to overstate the research.

It is also worth remembering that cocoa isn't the same as chocolate. Processing can reduce flavanol levels, and many chocolate products contain significant amounts of sugar and fat.

Cocoa remains a fascinating plant food, with its naturally occurring flavanols continuing to attract scientific interest.

A closer look at CoQ10

You may have heard of CoQ10, particularly in conversations around energy and healthy ageing, but what does it actually do in the body?

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a substance that our bodies naturally produce. One of its best-established roles is within the mitochondria – the tiny structures inside our cells responsible for producing much of the energy they need.

CoQ10 forms part of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and is involved in the process that ultimately produces ATP, the form of energy our cells can use.

It also has an interesting second role as an antioxidant. Research has looked particularly at ubiquinol, the reduced form of CoQ10, and its ability to help protect lipids in cell membranes and lipoproteins from oxidation.

You may see CoQ10 described as either ubiquinone or ubiquinol. These are its oxidised and reduced forms, and the ability to move between these states is part of the way CoQ10 carries out its functions within the body.

It’s quite fascinating when you consider just how much work is taking place inside our cells every second. CoQ10 may be a tiny part of that picture, but it has been the subject of a considerable amount of research into mitochondrial function, cellular energy and oxidative stress.
