Let's get started...
You know those people we call "good" sleepers? The ones that can sleep almost anywhere, anytime, no problem?
Not only was this completely perplexing to me when I had insomnia, but also slightly annoying.
Because how do they even do that?
My loves, I will tell you... they do not do anything. Which is precisely why they sleep so well! Maybe at one time, you were like this, too?
Here's the thing...
Sleep isn't complicated.
We make it complicated because when you're struggling with insomnia, it seems like the right thing to do.
We pile on all the things... the books, the research, the YouTube's, the practitioners, the hygiene, the supplements, the perfect herbs, the rituals, the meditations, the UV glasses, the weighted blanket, the eyeshades, the noisemaker, the blackout shades...
It's pretty much endless.
I know one person who used to fly to a certain region of the world because he believed it was the only place he could get some sleep.
Talk about expensive!
Now, there's nothing wrong with all of these things (I adore my white noisemaker).
But they don't create sleep.
There is only one thing that creates sleep and that's: sleep drive.
And what creates sleep drive?
WAKEFULNESS!
So essentially, the ONLY thing you need to be able to sleep is be awake for a long enough period of time.
That's it.
I know this may seem painfully obvious and far too simple. But I also know both as someone who went through decades of horrific insomnia, and now as a sleep coach, that our brain's seriously lose sight of this innate process when you're in the thick of it.
In fact, it feels almost impossible to believe.
Doing a bunch of things to create sleep, (even if it backfires), seems WAY more logical when you're going through night after night of frustrating sleeplessness.
Because if we let go of doing all the things, then what? How bad could it get?
Seems risky.
But here's the truth...
The most perfect sleep hygiene ritual in the world, or even the most talented sleep coach can't make you sleep. Because only your own sleep drive can do that.
(And remember, all that is required to create sleep drive is wakefulness.)
Now, here's where it gets interesting...
I can help you.
