I’ve messed up more times than I can count. And I’ve stayed in my comfort zone longer than I should have.
But every time I realised I was standing still, I forced myself to change track.

This year has been one of the biggest pivots of my life.

I’m learning German in Basel — 8 hours a week in a language school.
I earned my Master Butcher award from the Institute of Meat.
I walked away from the comfort of a steady job without a safety net.
I left the UK for a new life and new opportunities in Switzerland.
And somewhere in the middle of all that, I turned 60.

Most people slow down at this point.
I’m accelerating.

Because staying safe is what kept me stuck.
Every major turning point in my life came from stepping into the unknown. Not from clinging to what I already had.

If the next decade is anything like this year, I’m ready.
Let’s see what’s next.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀? Here’s the truth.

It’s not just knives, fridges, and a dream. A successful butcher shop is built on planning, discipline, and knowing exactly what customers want.

Here’s what matters:

• Market: Who are you serving? Families, restaurants, or niche buyers?
• Location: Foot traffic is oxygen.
• Suppliers: Reliable partners mean consistent quality.
• Equipment: Don’t cut corners.
• Compliance: Food safety is non-negotiable.
• Skills & Service: Great butchers build trust and loyalty.

Is it profitable?
Yes—if you run it properly. Margins improve with smart purchasing, waste reduction, and value-added products. Customer loyalty is everything.

Setup essentials:
• A clean, efficient layout
• Refrigeration, tools, and packaging
• Clear pricing
• Strong supplier links
• Solid marketing—online and offline

Marketing that works:
Show your craft, tell your story, use social media well, and become the trusted local expert. People buy from the butcher they know.

If you're serious about opening a shop, get the fundamentals right from day one. It will save you money, stress, and headaches.

Resilience. Creativity. Speed.
At this time of year, they stop being nice-to-haves and become survival tools.

The season exposes every weakness a business has. Footfall jumps, costs rise, customers get selective, and the competition suddenly finds energy.

The shops that thrive lean on three things:

Resilience – staying steady when plans break, stock tightens, or staffing gets chaotic.

Creativity – making the counter, the offer, or the service feel different from everyone else selling the same products.

Speed – reacting faster than the shop next door when trends shift or opportunities appear.

This season rewards operators who can take pressure, think differently, and move quickly.

Those who do will grow.
Those who don’t will feel it.

Three out of four restaurant meals are now eaten alone, straight from takeout boxes.

People are whispering secrets to AI at 3 AM instead of talking to each other.

And behind thousands of small shop counters, there’s another kind of loneliness no one talks about. The business owner’s.

I’ve been there. A one-man operation. Managing a small turnover shop for a multiple. Running my own shop on those quiet midweek days. Sometimes it was just me and the radio for company.

You open the shutters, greet the first customer, and hope today feels different. Most of the time it doesn’t. Customers shuffle in, avoid eye contact, browse in silence, then leave empty-handed.

Meanwhile, you carry the risk, the overhead, and the pressure. No one ever taught you how to bridge the gap.

Running a shop should be about community, not just transactions. But if you were never trained in connection, the silence can eat away at you.

Here’s the truth. Customers are not always looking for the cheapest product. They are often looking for someone who sees them. And you, the independent owner, are just as desperate to be seen.

The holidays will make this louder. Loneliness peaks while footfall drops. Do not just train your staff to ring sales. Train them to throw lifelines.

Because your business is not just surviving on margins. It is surviving on moments.

If Waitrose can sell a £29 ready meal, what’s stopping your shop from doing the same?”

Premium ready meals aren’t about ingredients.

They’re about presentation, packaging, and story.

Add a sauce, a side, and a name… and suddenly you’re not just a butcher, you’re an experience.

A business sets standards by deciding what “good” actually looks like, and refusing to budge. That means defining the non-negotiables: product quality, customer care, hygiene, safety, punctuality, the tone of communication, even how the shop looks when you open the door in the morning. It’s codified through training, repetition, and accountability. You make excellence visible and measurable, not a vague ideal pinned on a staff noticeboard.
The real lever is consistency. Anyone can have a good day; setting a standard means making every day meet that good day. The sharp knife stays sharp. The counter stays spotless. The customer never leaves with a bad taste. Literally or figuratively.

Small butchers are being crushed by costs they didn’t create.

Retail accounts for 5% of the UK economy but pays over 20% of all business rates.

Retail butchery? Just 0.03% of GDP.

Yet we pay the same inflationary tax.

Energy up 40–60%, meat prices soaring, NLW rising, waste charges climbing.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: we can’t control inflation. But we can control our response.

Challenge rates. Claim relief. Cut dead trading hours.

Protect margins with smart portioning, value-added products and yield control.

Add new channels; delivery, WhatsApp orders, email lists.

Band together. One butcher shouting gets ignored. A collective gets heard.

Inflation is real. But so is resilience. The high street butcher has survived wars, recessions and s**t government

We’ll get through this too, but not by standing still.

Your shop window can do more than showcase your best cuts.
It can sell for you, build your audience, and bring in orders when you’re not there. Here’s exactly how to make it happen — in four simple steps.

Step 1: Decide Where You Want to Send People
A QR code is just a digital signpost. The magic happens at the destination.
Choose one clear goal:
WhatsApp “click to chat” link

Website order page or Google form

Social media profile (Instagram, Facebook)

Tip: If you’re just starting out, a WhatsApp order link is easiest to set up.

Step 2: Create Your QR Code
Go to qr-code-generator.com or Canva.

Paste your chosen link.

Download your QR code (PNG or PDF works best).

Canva lets you design the poster and insert the QR code in one go, which is perfect for branding.

Step 3: Design a Clear, Bold Poster
Your message should be short, visible, and simple.
Examples:
“We may be closed, but we’re always open online.”

“Scan here to order via WhatsApp.”

“ Pre-order your weekend roast box.”

Add:
Shop logo and contact number

High-quality meat photo or seasonal offer

A call to action in BIG text

This isn’t a leaflet. It’s a billboard. Make it easy to read from across the street.

Step 4: Position It Where It Matters
Print it A3 or bigger — small signs get ignored.

Place it at eye level on the inside of your window.

Use laminated or weatherproof material.

Make sure it’s visible day and night (light it if you can).

The goal is to make the QR code feel like an invitation, not an afterthought.

Optional Add-On: WhatsApp Ordering Poster
Want to go further? Add a “WhatsApp Orders Taken Here” sign.
Include:
Your WhatsApp number

QR code

Pickup/delivery times

Bonus tip: If you use WhatsApp Business, set up an auto-reply for messages outside opening hours. It keeps the conversation alive even when you’re home with your feet up.

Start Small, Grow Fast
This isn’t about building a website empire.
It’s about giving people a way to interact with your shop when it suits them.
Start with:
One poster

One QR code

One offer

Then build on it as your confidence grows:
Add a newsletter sign-up

Seasonal specials

Delivery options

Final Thought
Your shop window is prime real estate.
Don’t just decorate it — make it work for you.
This small, low-cost change gives independent butchers something supermarkets can’t touch:
a personal connection that’s always open for business.

Your butcher business is like a bonfire.
Most keep it small, safe, and quiet.

But when you stack the logs higher, and feed it oxygen?
The whole street gathers around.

Customers don’t come for cold meat.
They come for the fire.

That’s why your counter has to burn brighter than the shop next door.

What are you doing to make your business standout to the person walking past your window?

25/10/2025

Saturday is the big day for small independent butcher shop owners.

Leave home just after 5am, buzzing to get to work.

I hope you still get excited when you put the key in the door, and take in the smell as you enter.
