Seeking the perfect pair: top of the list - Doyenne de 'Cosy' Comice, next Merton Pride (such fine balance one fell into my hand), Onward (the staggered look), Unknown Variety (a little bruised), Pierre Corneille (reticent, blushing), Beurre Hardy (keeping a little distance), and last comes Conference, definitely Pear not Pair, attracting an audience of eager little hands, and munched with relish.

Apples in the morning light tell quite different stories (cast in order of appearance): Laxton Superb making graceful bows, Allington fighting for space in the front row, Kidds Orange Red aspiring to fabric design, Lord Burghley putting on a show of splendour, to almost the last Prince Charles, hanging in there; tresses of Dumelows, blessed at Wassailing, Monarchs competing for attention, and the portly as ever Rev Wilkes, your guess at a verb....

Annie Elizabeth in all her glory, Queen Caroline, Lord Derby, Court Pendu Plat, Orleans Reinette, parties of russets and pippins and our humble Martin's Custard: what a stupendous apple harvest it is, and how beautiful the orchard in the evening light.
