St Jude - This is an amazing raw milk, soft, cow's cheese, a little bit farmy and very indulgent. This has been tasting excellent since before Christmas and with the consistency of taste and texture this is a great testament to the cheesemaker, Julie.

A very deserving winner of Best British Cheese - if you're into St Marcellin but with a very British twist, then give this a go.

Raedwald - A pasteurised , washed rind, cow's cheese from Fen Farm Dairy, the amazing dairy that produces Baron Bigod.

This is a seasonal cheese (and we may well be getting to the end of it for this year), very soft & light, a gentle take on the French Reblochon. The flavours are reminiscent of smoky bacon & mushrooms.

Poacher 50 - a hard, 4 year aged, raw cow's milk cheese from Lincolnshire. This was an award presented by the Specialist Cheesemakers Association (SCA), an organisation that advices and supports micros cheesemakers.

This is a sweet, almost parmigiano style cheese, fruity with a massive taste. We only started stocking it earlier this year but it has proved a huge success. If you looking for something a bit different from a cheddar that's almost a parmigiano.

Last weekend saw the Artisan Cheese Awards take place at Melton Mowbray.

The awards are designed to support artisan cheesemakers in the UK and Ireland. And it is clear how the amount of producers across these countries are growing with 644 entrants this year from over 100 cheesemakers.

The only restriction to entry is that they need to be micro – medium size cheesemaker who produce commercially no more than 400 tons of cheese per year in total.

And you will be delighted to learn that here at Chorlton Cheesemongers we stock a number of the winners, 7 in fact, and over the next few days we'll let you know which ones they are.

With Easter this weekend we have the first tantalising taste of the new season's cheeses. The first of which is the ever popular La Perla Mozzarella. Produced 50 miles south of Naples in Capaccio in Campania, this buffalo mozzarella is light, soft and full of flavour. When broken open the centre is still full of that beautiful milk that makes this region of Italy rightly famous as the centre for mozzarella production.

These are made fresh every week and are in the UK and up to Manchester within days - you'll be hard pushed to get a fresher Italian mozzarella .

We have limited stock at the moment, so first come first served, but we will be stocking it throughout this spring and summer.

Back by popular demand, two small French goat's cheese, Mistral - a raw goat's milk from Haute -Provence, a rich creamy cheese, feathery texture, lightly salted and wrapped in chestnut leaf. And, Buchette De Manon, again from Haute-Provence, a rich milk and finished off with a sprinkling of Winter Savoury.

I love this two cheeses, but they are limited - another welcome to Spring.

We have a special seasonal treat for this weekend, and, hopefully, maybe a few weeks longer.

Raedwald - For those of you who know Baron Bigod, this is out of the Fen Farm Dairy camp. A washed rind cheese made from January to March (so we're a bit late to the party on this one). Soft, unctuous, earthy & smoky. It's a beautiful heralder of spring.

And the name? Following the tradition of Fen Farms liking for East Anglian rulers, Raedwald was the Anglo-Saxon king of the Eastern Angles whose tomb is believed to be at Sutton Hoo.

Happy International Cheese Day!

March 27th is a celebration of 'traditional' cheese, especially those made with raw milk by farms and small artisanal dairies.

We have a multitude for you to try - cow's milk, sheep's milk, and goat's milk, mature or mild, soft or hard, crumbly or creamy, blue, and any combination of the above!

The main focus of the day is to promote the idea of trying something new - so let us know what sort of things you like, and we can help you find a new favourite, or open your eyes to a new place, taste or texture! We're always happy to make recommendations on pairings and share our own personal favourites with you to taste in the shop or on the stall at Altrincham Market.

Come and help us celebrate the joy of Cheese!
