Top Farm Piggies Squeakly Report

We've all been adjusting to the newest members of the herd, Ezri Dax and little Molly O'Brien.

Little Molly is growing daily. Mostly because she just keeps stuffing her face. Every time mum-hooman walks through the piggy room, Molly alerts us to her presence, squeaking so loudly her ears flap up and down. Mum-hooman handles her every day and girl-hooman loves how Molly sits in her hand enjoying a fuss. Molly has fixated on Fat-bum-Thalia, and follows her everywhere.

Ezri Dax and Major Kira have had a bit of a more rocky start to the adjustment, with both wanting to be top piggy. They've settled down now, with Ezri firmly established as herd leader. Kira is ok with this, as it leaves discipline of raucous Molly to Ezri and Kira can now be the cool aunt who shows Molly how to pull the fleece down off the wall and snuggle into it.

Jadzia Dax is less bothered by it all. She's happy in her box, still convinced everything is going to eat her from above, despite the others telling her it won't. But it might. And if the others are all scuffling around, she can eat her food in peace.

As you can see, give us a pile of grass and we're all best friends though.

Saturday shout outs

We know we're on borrowed time now as the end of the season draws closer. The cooler nights, the effects of the drought and the powdery mildew that has exploded in these warm damp conditions.

But still the land provides for us and we are grateful for its bounty. 🌳🌿🍑🍎

Which is why we're still able to share with those amazing customers who have messaged with orders and requests for mixed boxes this week and our valued business customers.

Friday Funny 🤣🤣🤣

I thought this was rather apt this week, given how one minute it's been sunny, then rain, then sun, then thunder, then clear. In fact, today is a good example - it's raining as I write this but it'll dry up this afternoon.

We really do need the rain after weeks of dry weather. The grass is greening up nicely and the crops are germinating in the farmers fields. It's been slow and steady, great for soaking into the ground.

I believe it's meant to be dry this weekend, which is great as I'm off to Wragby Show on Sunday as a Produce Judge and then spend the day walking around the stalls rather than working a stall!

Now, I love tomatoes. I even did my postgraduate in them - mathematical modelling of tomatoes influenced by different factors. All it taught me was I never want to work in commercial tomato production 🤣.

Anyway, the beefsteak tomatoes have FINALLY gotten going (with only 5 weeks left in the season this is incredibly frustrating) but a selection are heading later this morning to both Tabula Rasa in Louth and j Shaw's in
Alvingham.

The cherry plums have been very productive and once more, they are Nicki's "favourite children" although she called them a few choice names yesterday whilst picking them as the strings had collapsed again.

Never a dull day working here!

A few weeks ago, a lovely customer arrived as part of her annual visit to collect frozen raspberries, loganberries and tummelberries to turn into fruit based gins to enjoy over the winter.

She sent me pictures of the finished products at the weekend. Definitely a great use of our organic berries!

🍂🍂🍂 Happy Meteorological Autumn!!! 🍂 🍂🍂

Meteorological autumn is the period of time from September 1 to November 30, as defined by the meteorological calendar.

Meteorological seasons are based on the annual temperature cycle and are split into four quarters to match the Gregorian calendar. This makes it easier to compare monthly and seasonal statistics for meteorological observing and forecasting.

The astronomical calendar, on the other hand, defines the beginning of autumn as the autumn equinox, which usually occurs around 21-23 September - this year it's at 12:06am GMT on 23 September. The autumn equinox is when the sun shines directly on the equator, resulting in roughly 12 hours of day and night.

We've definitely noticed the seasonal changes on the farm - lots of things slowing down, the squashes and pumpkins ripening and the mornings are definitely cooler but the days are still warm.

Most noticeable now to us are the darker mornings and drawing in of nights. Sunset today 01 September is 19:51. On 30 September it will be at 18:41. Over an hour's difference.

Top Farm Piggies Squeakly Report

The herd is happy 😁 we have two new members!!!!!

Old lady Ezri Dax joins the herd after her sister passed away. At nearly 4yrs old, she's already establishing her place as the matriarch but is very loving and friendly to all including mum-hooman.

Baby Molly O'Brien also joins the herd at 5 weeks old. Her mum, a youngster herself, dyed a couple of weeks after giving birth so Molly had been staying with Ezri and mum-hooman couldn't bear to split them up. Girl-hooman is very pleased with her new baby and is handling her everyday.

The rest of the herd are adjusting to our newest members and sharing our food with them nicely....mostly....🤣

This is so important to so many small local businesses.

I’ve had people ask for prices & then tell me they can get it cheaper in a certain mainstream local supermarket. Yes sometimes local businesses are more expensive, but sometimes also cheaper!

Depending on where you are, hopefully you've had some rain by now? As I write this, it's torrential rain here on the farm - the leaves and moss have clogged the gutters but after weeks of drought, it's a price we're happy to pay as it means we can fill the water tanks to water the greenhouses.

The fruit trees are very thankful for the rain, as you can see, and a few have some beautiful apples, such as Winter Gem which is sponsored by Jo Crow, who came to see her tree this week.

If you sponsor a fruit tree and would like to visit it, just get in touch. Most don't have fruit still as they are young but from next year, they should start producing.

If you don't sponsor a fruit tree and would like to, get in touch. We have Lincolnshire apples, east of England pears and plums and undercover peaches, apricots and nectarines. A great birthday or celebration gift that lasts all year.
