Some things in life are worth being wildly particular about.

For us, one of those is truly organic tea.

When our founder Kiran arrived in London in 1989, she went looking for a tea grown without pesticides. There wasn’t one. So she went out there, found the one grower, Rajah Banerjee at Makaibari, who proudly announced ‘there are no nasties in my soil’.

It wasn’t enough to just buy the tea from the garden. Kiran organised its certification, and in 1991, Makaibari became the world’s first Demeter biodynamic tea garden. That’s what we mean about being wildly particular. Doing the right thing is the bare minimum.

Over 30 years on, still the same estate. Still 100% organic. Still stitching our bags with cotton thread so no plastic ends up in your cup.

Black tea has a lighter side.

Our Earl Grey begins with elegant Darjeeling leaves, grown biodynamically in India.

Then we add fragrant bergamot oil from Reggio Calabria in southern Italy.

An Indian-Italian love affair that creates a fresh, lively and gloriously aromatic tea.

Citrussy. Light. Renewing.

Enjoy it hot with a slice of lemon, or let it cool and pour it over ice for a brighter summer brew.

Our story began in 1989, so we asked Kiran to take us back to the start.

“I was at the Tea Board of India and a tea grower called Rajah Banerjee was talking about his garden - growing tea naturally, without pesticides, in a way nobody else was doing.

I said: why don’t you tell people about this?

He said: if you feel so strongly about it, you tell them.

That was 37 years ago.”

Hampstead Tea was born from a challenge, a handful of samples, and a lot of phone calls.

And Kiran and Rajah’s passion for the best tasting tea is just as strong now as it was then.

Tea with nothing to hide.

Plastic Free July? We’re here for it.

Anything that helps people question how much plastic is hidden in everyday habits can only be a good thing.

But for us, plastic-free tea isn’t a one-month commitment.
We’ve been making ours this way since 1989.

Because when you drink tea every day, what your tea bag is made from adds up.

Most tea bags still contain microplastics.

Ours are stitched, not glued. Made with unbleached paper and organic cotton string.

That means:
🌱 Cleaner Brew
🌱 Fresher flavour
🌱 Recyclable, biodegradable & home compostable

But plastic-free has never been a trend for us.
It’s just how tea should be.
