Interesting Research on Omega-3 Fats and Weight Management

Omega-3 fatty acids are fats found in foods such as fish and nuts. They play many important roles in the body. New research shows they impact weight management by influencing the formation of new fat cells—and that’s a good thing.

There are antenna-like structures that extend from the surface of the cell known called cilia. They are designed to pick up and send cellular signals. Defects in the cilium are known to be associated with obesity and insulin resistance, but the reasons have been unclear. Researchers discovered that the cilium can sense omega-3 fats in the diet and signal the stem cells in fat tissue to divide and turn into new fat cells.
Without the signal to initiate the formation of new cells to store fat, existing fat cells become larger. It’s better to have more small fat cells than fewer, larger fat cells. The larger the cells are the more likely they are to be linked to insulin resistance, other health conditions, and to the release of toxic contents.

This research opens up a new and exciting area of study involving omega-3 fats, and re-emphasizes the importance of eating a diet that includes healthy fats, especially the polyunsaturated fats you know as omega-3s.

Sedentary life.... quickens aging...

Sedentary Lifestyles Accelerate Aging

A recent study has shown that cells age faster during a sedentary lifestyle. This may not be good news for sedentary people.

Telomeres are the tiny caps located on the ends of DNA strands that protect them from fraying. We inherit telomeres from our parents, and regardless of the length of our telomeres at birth, everyone’s telomeres eventually shorten with age. Health status and unhealthy lifestyles are thought to accelerate the process, and scientific studies have shown a strong association between the length of telomeres and the cellular aging process.

Recently researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine found that mature women who sit for more than 10 hours a day and have a low physical activity level (less than 40 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity a day) had cells that were biologically older by eight years compared to less sedentary women.

It is important to note that this study only looked at the women's activity levels and telomeres at one point in time. It isn’t known whether activity levels or sitting causes telomeres to shorten and it isn’t clear if these results apply to men and younger people. However it’s difficult to argue that most of us would benefit from spending less time sitting down. Maybe it’s time to consider renewing that gym membership!

We are all confronted with stress. But how resilient are you?

Resilience — our ability to bounce back from adversity - is an essential life skill for all ages. Scientists who study stress refer to resilience as an emotional muscle that can be strengthened.
Life in general brings all kinds of adversity and stressors, and how we respond to stress has important consequences for both physical and mental health.

A study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research found that gratitude, altruism, and having a clear purpose in life helped to predict a resilient status.

Life is full of both successes and challenges. Appreciate the successes, and make sure that you build your emotional resilience muscle to confront the challenges.
