Last week we had a lovely visitor at Rafters.

Mev from Berry & Bright in Morley made the journey over to Driffield after following our page for some time. She’d only been trading for around 10 months and wanted a chat about the realities of running an independent shop.

I have to say, I was incredibly impressed.

Starting a business today takes courage. The costs are high, the competition is fierce and there are plenty of challenges along the way. We’ve been trading for 29 years, so whilst we’ve become battle-hardened over the years, I wouldn’t underestimate just how difficult it is for someone starting from scratch.

What struck me most about Mev was her enthusiasm, positivity and determination to make a success of her business. We need more people like her.

Independent shops bring character, personality and community spirit to our towns. Without people willing to take that leap of faith, our high streets become a much poorer place.

So I’d like to ask a small favour. Please give Berry & Bright a follow and, if you’re anywhere near Morley, call in and say hello. Every thriving independent business started with someone taking a chance, and I genuinely hope the local community gets behind her.

Stopped by Of Driffield on my way to Brid earlier.

I’ve been following this shop & the humble owner, since I opened Berry & Bright

It was so nice to meet the lovely Andy 🤗 He runs, what reminded me of, what used to be ‘Lawtons’ (Andy also just happens to be a former employee of Lawton’s 😳 what a small world) !!!

Thank you for your time, esp cz I just rocked up 🤭 so thank you again. I really appreciated your advice & time. You’ve got an absolutely thriving shop there, first time in Driffield also, and what a cute little town. Wonderful staff, the shop just looked fabulous 😍

It really was a pleasure to meet you! 😇
