Newent Market Then & Now: The Upstairs Downstairs Edition πŸ›οΈ
As you browse the market tomorrow take a moment to wonder what actually went on inside the Market House on market days gone by?
Downstairs, between those famous oak pillars, was the serious business: butter, cheese, eggs and poultry, sold in the shade where the dairy wouldn't turn. The perishables got the prime covered pitch β€” everything else took its chances in the weather. Some things never change. β˜”
Upstairs was where the real drama happened. The upper chamber was the town's office, courtroom and committee room rolled into one β€” where tolls were collected, dodgy weights and measures were checked, and traders who'd had a thumb on the scales were brought to account. Sell a short pound of butter and you'd be up those stairs explaining yourself before you could say "it's the humidity." βš–οΈ
So: shopping downstairs, bureaucracy upstairs. The medieval work-life balance.
Today the trading floor has spread out onto the square - but the Market House is still watching over it all, now open as a museum, where you can climb those same stairs without being fined for anything. Pop in on market day and stand where four centuries of market gossip happened. 🧺
Same building. Same market at its feet. Considerably fewer butter-related prosecutions.
Come and check out our wonderful traders downstairs, then head up top for a slice of Newent History.

Newent Market Then & Now: Entertainment Edition 🎢
Market day in the olden days was basically Glastonbury with more livestock. Wandering minstrels sang for pennies, jugglers and tumblers worked the crowd, and ballad-singers belted out the latest hits β€” then sold you the lyrics on a printed sheet, which is essentially how the medieval charts worked. If you were really lucky (or unlucky, depending on your seat), there might be a dancing bear. 🐻
And keeping half an eye on all of it: the town waits - the official municipal musicians, employed to pipe important visitors into town and generally provide a soundtrack to civic life. Yes, towns once had musicians on the payroll. We've checked the budget. Sadly, still no.
The headline act hasn't gone anywhere, mind. This Saturday we welcome the mighty Drybrook Male Voice Choir β€” generations of Forest voices raised in perfect harmony, and not a dancing bear among them. 🎀
Same square. Same songs in the air. Considerably better animal welfare

Newent Market Then & Now: Healthcare Edition 🦷
In the olden days, the market was where you came to get a tooth pulled. The travelling "tooth-drawer" would set up on a stage, in his finest flamboyant coat, and yank out your molar in front of a cheering crowd - no anaesthetic, no appointment, no aftercare beyond a swig of something strong. Some even brought a drummer along, and not for the atmosphere: the drumming was to drown out the screaming, so as not to put off the next customer in the queue. πŸ₯
Market medicine didn't stop at teeth. Quack doctors sold miracle cures for everything from gout to heartbreak, usually from the same bottle.
Happily, the market has moved on. This month we're all about keeping you well rather than making you scream: natural beeswax products, scented candles, and herbal teas that soothe rather than sedate. πŸπŸ•―οΈπŸ΅
Same square. Same tradition of looking after you. Considerably less painful - See you on Saturday!

πŸ›οΈ Fun fact: Newent has been doing "shop local" since King Henry III put it in writing.

The monks at our priory here in Newent were keen for the town to be the place to shop locally. So, they petitioned King Henry III for a market charter, which he granted to Newent in 1226 when he visited the town on his way to Hereford.

The charter meant that no competing markets could be set up within 10 miles of Newent – about a full day's travelling back then. Take a look at a map today and see where our neighbouring market towns are. That bit of parchment really helped shape our local landscape.

Our Market Charter is now 800 years old – which makes it officially older than forks, printed books, and even the entire concept of the weekend.

This Saturday morning in the Market Square, we keep that tradition alive with our monthly Town & Country Market.

Come along and be part of 800 years of shopping local.
