It’s hard not to feel a knot in my stomach as news breaks about another outbreak of avian flu — this time here in Devon.
The reports bring back painful memories of February, when we received confirmation that avian flu had reached our own family farm. It’s something I’ll never forget — the shock, the heartbreak, and the sense of helplessness as we did everything we could to protect our birds.
For anyone going through it now, my heart truly goes out to you. Unless you’ve lived through it, it’s hard to describe just how devastating it is — not just for the flock, but for everyone who cares for them.
The photo I’ve shared was taken 15 years ago, when our children were little and holding our hens with such pride and excitement as we began this journey. Looking back now, it’s a reminder of why we do what we do — and how much heart goes into it.
Let’s keep supporting one another and remembering the people behind the headlines. 💔
Feel free to share this post to help raise awareness of the families and farms affected by avian flu — the human stories behind the announcements that are often unheard.
