We’re a family run food production business in Northampton, UK, where we were established in 1983 by Nigel Wagstaff. We produce award-winning meat products with the best British and EU pork, supplying the catering and retail sector. Our story is one that stretches more than 40 years, and four generations of family, which all started with Nigel’s Uncle Don. Don worked in farming his whole life and

he inherited Grove Farm in Moulton – a village in Northampton – in the 1970s following the sad passing of his employer. It was during this time that Don introduced Nigel to the farming life, with Nigel working on the land and rearing the animals on the weekends. During the week he’d then help his father in the local butcher’s shop, delivering his rounds on a push bike. Sadly, Don sold Grove Farm in the 90s to pursue his love of farming in Devon, but he left a lasting impression on Nigel. Fast forward to 1983: Following redundancy, Nigel with the support of his wife Jo, took a leap of faith and started the family business. It was then that Houghton Hams was born. With Nigel’s experience in both farming and butchery, and the acquisition of their secret recipe ‘the Wagstaff complete cure’, the business produced artisan hams and gammons, operating in a small unit in the village. Always selecting the best regional UK and European based farms, we have continued to produce excellent quality meat products for 40 years, meeting the strictest welfare and industry standards, and winning several awards along the way. Today, our business still operates from Moulton, in a premises that is 10 times the size of our original home. We remain under the careful management of the Wagstaff family, with Nigel and Jo leading the business alongside their four children – Paul, Linda, Julie and Sarah – and with 60+ employees making up the extended Houghton Hams family. We still manufacture using same secret recipe, with family and passion at the heart of everything we do.

A brilliant atmosphere, fantastic hospitality, and a home win - a great evening all round at Northamptonshire County Cricket Club 🏏👏

We were at Wantage Road on Tuesday night as match sponsors of the Steelbacks Vitality Blast match against Worcestershire Rapids.

We brought along friends, family, staff and partners for the occasion, and it was one to remember.

Supporting our local sport means a lot to us - and Wantage Road has plenty of happy memories for our family.

Our connection with Northamptonshire County Cricket Club goes back to the early 1990s.

Back then, Allan Lamb - one of the club’s all-time greats - was kind enough to appear in our charity calendar, pictured alongside Henry the Houghton Ham.

The calendar was raising money for the Anne Diamond SIDS Appeal, and it's a moment Nigel has always looked back on fondly 👏

Nigel also built a relationship with Rob Bailey and the hospitality team at Wantage Road during those years - the kind of local ties that stick.

More than 30 years on, it's great to be back supporting the Club as a sponsor this season.

As part of our relationship, we will be sponsoring Northamptonshire Steelbacks' Vitality Blast match against Worcestershire Rapids this week.

As a family business rooted in Northampton, backing our local sport has always meant a lot to us.

When you pick up our ham, you can be confident it’s been made to the highest standards 🏆

We recently received our BRCGS AA* certification - the highest grade possible following one of the most rigorous audits in the food industry.

It covers everything from how ingredients are handled to hygiene controls across the whole production process.

Typically British - the sun came out the moment the BBQ wrapped up 🌞

But Northampton Saints looked after us well at the sponsors' event, and it was a pleasure to catch up with the two players we've sponsored this season, Ed Prowse and Trevor Davison.

Nigel and Ed found common ground fairly quickly - farming, as it turned out. And Trev gave us an honest update on the season and his injury, with his sights set on being fit for the start of next year.

With the Saints confirming their home semi-final, we're looking forward to that and hopefully cheering them on to some silverware 👏

In 1983, Jo - our co-founder - walked into her former employer’s office and asked a simple question:

“Could we have a small unit, please?”

She’d worked for the Development Corporation, and they had developed commercial space at Moulton Park in Northampton.

Their answer: “Yes”.

And they gave us a 1,000 sq ft space with six months of free rent and rates, to help get us off the ground.

Nigel Wagstaff had his background in farming and butchery, we had the Wagstaff complete cure - a recipe that’s still in use today - and we had our new HQ.

Pork legs came in, were cured, cooked and packed in the same room - with butchers from Buswell’s stopping by on their way home to work the cuts - then Nigel and Jo would load their own cars and hand-deliver the products around Northants.

That was the beginning of Houghton Hams.

Today our HQ is still in Moulton Park, stretching across 50,000 sq ft. We have a team of 100+ people, our own fleet of trucks, and produce more than 175,000 packets of deli quality ham each week.
