PLASTIC FREE JULY DAY 23: Starting a Mug Library

Did you know the UK uses an estimated 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups every year? Many contain a plastic lining, making them difficult to recycle.

One simple idea we love is the Mug Library.

Instead of reaching for a disposable cup, cafés, offices and community spaces can keep a shelf of donated mugs for anyone who forgets their reusable cup. Borrow one, wash it, return it, ready for the next person.

It’s a brilliant example of the circular economy in action: giving unwanted mugs a second life and reducing unnecessary waste.

Could your workplace, village hall, church, community café or sports club start one?

Sometimes the simplest ideas have the biggest impact. 💚

PLASTIC FREE JULY DAY 20 🌍 | Make the Switch to a Reusable Razor

Did you know that billions of disposable razors are thrown away every year? Because they're made from a mix of plastic and metal, most can't be recycled and end up in landfill.

A reusable safety razor is a simple swap that can make a big difference:

♻️ Replace only the blade, not the whole razor
✨ A close, smooth shave
💚 Built to last for years, not weeks

Sometimes the most sustainable choice is the one you only need to buy once.

Visit us in-store or online to explore our range of reusable razors, soaps, blade tins and replacement blades, and make your next shave kinder to the planet.

PLASTIC FREE JULY DAY 19: Choosing Laundry Sheets or Powders (or refilling your liquids).

💡 Did you know? Traditional liquid laundry detergents are mostly water and are often sold in single-use plastic bottles. Choosing lower-waste alternatives can help reduce plastic packaging and unnecessary transport.

At The Village Refill, we offer a range of laundry solutions to suit different households:

🧺 Laundry Sheets – Made in the UK, lightweight, compact and easy to store.

🌿 Laundry Powder – Made locally in Oxfordshire by social enterprise SESI and available in Bio and Non-Bio. A great alternative to bottled detergents while supporting a local producer.

💧 Concentrated Laundry Liquid – Also made locally in Oxfordshire by SESI and available in Bio and Non-Bio. Bring your own container to refill, or choose one of our repurposed tubs to keep packaging in use for longer.

There isn’t one perfect solution—it’s about choosing the option that works best for your home while helping to reduce waste.

Every refill, every reused container and every small swap makes a difference.

🌱 Wash smarter. Waste less. Support local.

PLASTIC FREE JULY DAY 18: Wear Natural Fibres👕

What you wear can make a real difference.

Natural fibres like cotton, wool, h**p, and linen are breathable, comfortable, and made by nature. They help keep you cool in summer, warm in winter, and are a more sustainable choice than many synthetic fabrics.

Unlike polyester and other plastic-based materials, natural fibres:
🌱 Are made with fewer chemicals
💧 Often require less processing
🌍 Have a lower environmental impact
♻️ Biodegrade naturally at the end of their life

Synthetic fabrics can take hundreds of years to break down and may shed microplastics every time they're washed, contributing to plastic pollution in our waterways and oceans.

Choosing natural fibres isn't just better for the planet—it's better for you too. They're breathable, durable, naturally hypoallergenic, and feel wonderful against your skin.

This Plastic Free July, take a look at your wardrobe. Choosing quality natural fibres where you can is a simple swap that supports a healthier planet and a healthier home. 💚

PLASTIC FREE JULY DAY 17:🗑️ Ditch the Plastic Bin Liner! 🌿

Did you know most household bins don't actually need a plastic liner?

If your rubbish is mostly dry packaging, simply empty the contents into your outside bin, give the bin a quick wipe if needed, and use it again. It's a simple switch that can save hundreds of plastic bags every year.

A few easy tips:
🌱 Wrap food scraps in newspaper or compost them if you can.
🧽 Rinse your bin occasionally with hot soapy water or a vinegar solution.
♻️ Reuse paper bags or cardboard to collect dry recycling instead of using plastic.
🛒 If you do need a liner, choose a reusable washable liner or use a bag you've already brought home instead of buying new ones.

Small changes really do add up. By skipping single-use bin liners where possible, you're cutting plastic waste, saving money, and helping the planet—one bin at a time. 💚

🌿 PLASTIC FREE JULY DAY 14: Avoiding Plastic Wipes

Many everyday wet wipes and cleaning wipes contain plastic fibres. These don't break down like paper and can contribute to microplastic pollution. If they're flushed, they can also cause blocked sewers and waterways.

This Plastic Free July, make the switch to:
✨ Reusable and compostable wipes
🧼 Refillable cleaning products with washable cloths

💚 DIY Travel Wet Wipes
Place a few reusable wipes into a small airtight container or reusable wet bag and add:

💧 250ml warm water
🫧 1 tsp castile soap
🌿 Optional: 1 tsp aloe vera gel

Leave the wipes to absorb the solution until they're damp but not dripping. They're perfect for sticky hands, faces and everyday clean-ups on the go.

Top tip: Make only what you'll use within a few days and wash the wipes after each use.

The best part? We stock everything you need at The Village Refill:
🧺 Reusable wipes
🌿 EcoLiving Compostable Wipes
🫧 Castile soap
🌱 Aloe vera gel
🫙 Reusable jars and containers

Small swaps really do make a big difference. Every reusable cloth or compostable wipe helps reduce plastic waste.

🌱 Wipe clean. Leave less behind.

🌿 PLASTIC FREE JULY DAY 13: Refuse Plastic Wrap

💡 Did you know? Around 1.2 billion metres of plastic cling film are used in UK homes every year. Most conventional cling film can't be recycled through household recycling because it's lightweight and often contaminated with food.

The good news is there are plenty of simple alternatives.

Instead of reaching for single-use plastic wrap, try:
🥪 Reusable beeswax wraps for sandwiches, cheese and leftovers.
🥣 Glass or stainless steel containers with lids.
🍉 Plates or bowls over leftovers in the fridge.
🫙 Reused jars for sauces, snacks and ingredients.

Need the convenience of cling film? We also stock compostable cling film—a lower-impact alternative when a wrap is the most practical option.

At The Village Refill, you'll find a range of reusable food storage solutions, including beeswax wraps, compostable cling film, reusable sandwich bags, stainless steel containers and glass storage jars—making it easier to reduce single-use plastic in your kitchen without compromising on convenience.

Plastic Free July isn't about perfection. It's about making better choices, one small swap at a time.

🌱 Wrap smarter. Waste less.
