A race against the clock ⏰

With heavy rain forecast tonight, George was keen to get the main crop carrots in the ground AND w**d the ones already planted that have just poked their heads above soil.

So just before lunch, he and Alex headed out to simultaneously w**d and sow the same field before the rain came. They made it in time.

For those interested, the carrot variety this year is Autumn King - a favourite on the farm, very tasty and reliable. Look forward to these in a few months time.

The first of the Broad Beans

A TRUE sign that summer is here (along with the heat!) is the first pick of the broad beans. George always plants numerous successions of these delicious veg and we will be enjoying them for a good few weeks now.

Picked and podded fresh, the flavour is sweet and nutty and delicious. They are worth the effort to cook and please do enjoy them as soon as they arrive at your door - practically still warm from the field.

And let the watering commence… 💦

With so many seedlings and plants waiting to go in the ground at this time of year, we really have to be on top of the watering in these temperatures. The tunnels are on a sprinkler system, although they are usually not watered every day. Out in the fields, the veg are rather left to their own devices unless it’s very hot and dry and there are new plants in the ground, in which case we will manually run a drip tape along the rows to help bed them in.

Without our own water source and irrigation system on the farm, we have to VERY carefully conserve and ration what we use.

As of this year, we DO now have three large water capture tanks which we are hoping will make all the difference, more on this soon.

Lettuces as big as your head (hundreds of them!) 🥬

Harvested for the veg boxes yesterday, heading for your door tomorrow.

A fabulous crop, the perfect time to take them out now the courgettes need a bit more space.

A fantastic day on the farm 🚜

Saturday was busy and bustling as the rain held off and families arrived in droves to enjoy a day out on our farm.

Robin was on BBQ duty and dished up 100’s of portions of our own lamb and sausages (direct from the fields). Cathy’s organic salads and popcorn cauliflower went down a storm, created with plenty of produce from the polytunnels she’d grown herself as part of the market garden team.

Farmer Fred’s sheep shearing demos were incredibly popular and Farmer Bennett Jnr and Snr were kept very busy with the tractor trailer rides.

Thank you to ALL our wonderful team and for making these events happen and to all of those who came along to make it such a success.

Courgettes are a’coming

It’s staggering to watch the rate at which the first courgettes are appearing. Strangely, at one end of the tunnel the plants are laden while the at other end they still have some work to do to catch up - but on the whole, this protected cropping has worked very well.

These plants are currently in one of the caterpillar tunnels but we will be lifting and shifting that over to new beds in the coming days so they’ll be out in the open to fend for themselves. Hopefully the worst of the cold nights are past us and they will continue to grow well now they’ve had this head start.

(As you can see, the courgettes are interplanted with lettuce as a ‘quick crop’ which will be harvested before the courgettes need the space)
