Twenty Years in Independent Health Retail: A Journey of Resilience, Reinvention and Belief
It is difficult to believe that 20 years have passed since my wife, Heather, and I opened our first health store in June 2006. The time has flown by, although the journey has certainly not followed a straight line.
At the time, we were a young couple with years of experience in the health industry and plenty of ambition. Heather had worked alongside her father in his health store, while I had been fortunate enough to work as a sales representative for Solgar Vitamins, Natureβs Plus and, finally, Viridian Nutrition.
In the space of one memorable year, we left our jobs, got married, discovered we were expecting our first child and opened our first health-food shop. Looking back, it was either brave or completely ridiculous. Most likely, it was a little of both.
The shop we purchased was firmly rooted in the past. The shelves were packed with almost every product range imaginable, and we were still weighing out small bags of herbs on a set of ancient scales. It had charm, but it needed a clearer identity and a more sustainable business model.
We gradually streamlined the ranges and focused on working with companies that genuinely supported independent health stores. We introduced more products from brands such as Viridian, Solgar, Natureβs Aid, Pukka and Quest. We moved away from low-value lines that took a great deal of time but contributed very little to the future of the business.
Our philosophy was simple: better products, stronger margins, more effective advice and improved results for our customers.
The approach worked. In our first year, we were delighted to win New Independent Retailer of the Year. A couple of years later, we won Retailer of the Year. Those awards meant a great deal because they confirmed that the changes we were making were taking the business in the right direction.
Introducing sports nutrition was another major turning point. It became a significant part of the shop and has remained central to the business ever since. The early years were exciting. We watched the store grow, built strong relationships with customers and developed a reputation for honest advice and specialist knowledge.
This was long before Facebook, TikTok and the endless stream of online content that now dominates retail marketing. You built a business through personal service, word of mouth and the trust you earned one customer at a time.
After around five years, we had outgrown our original shop. We moved into a small, three-storey former department store. It was a huge step for us, but we needed the space. By that point, we also had a successful website, an eBay store and two young children. There were never enough hours in the day, so we recruited more staff and took the plunge.
The new store was everything we had hoped it would be. The ground floor housed the health store, the middle floor was dedicated to sports supplements and fitness equipment, and the top floor contained therapy rooms. It felt as though all the hard work was paying off.
Then came the curveball.
During resurfacing work outside the store, the local council damaged the Victorian drainage system beneath the road. The street was closed for three months, and customers could barely reach us. The disruption cost the business more than Β£200,000 in lost revenue.
The compensation offered to us was Β£3,000.
We simply could not continue. We had no choice but to close the store.
It was an incredibly difficult period. We kept the website running, and Heather and I both took other jobs to keep food on the table and support our family. We lost our house and many of our possessions, but we refused to lose hope.
I missed the shop. More than that, I missed helping people. It was what I knew and what I genuinely loved doing.
With a budget of just Β£6,000, scraped together from wherever we could find it, I opened The Little Supplement Company. It was a modest start and a long way from the three-storey business we had previously built. In many ways, it felt as though we were starting again from the beginning.
For the first two years, I worked in the shop every day. At night, I worked at a local B&Q, stocking shelves from 9.30pm until 3am. Sundays were usually spent catching up on sleep through sheer exhaustion.
It has taken 10 hard years to rebuild our lives, but throughout that time I have never stopped believing in the value of the independent health sector. People will always need reliable products, honest advice and knowledgeable retailers who genuinely care about helping them.
Today, 20 years after we first entered independent health retail, business is booming. My children have grown into amazing young people. Heather remains my soulmate and best friend. I still have the privilege of helping customers every day, using the knowledge and experience I have gathered throughout my career.
The business model has changed dramatically. We no longer focus on food, teas and general grocery lines. The Little Supplement Company is now a specialist supplement store with a much clearer identity. We offer nutritional products, access to therapists and a growing range of additional services.
We have also developed our own LSC supplement range, our Gym Squad Supps sports-nutrition brand and our NVRENUF Gymwear clothing range.
One of the most important lessons I learned during my early days with Solgar was that knowledge and honesty are the foundations of a successful health business. Customers remember good advice. They recommend you to their friends and family. They return because they trust you, not because you pushed the most expensive product on the shelf.
That principle remains at the heart of everything we do. We share knowledge in-store, through social media and across our online platforms. The tools may have changed over the past two decades, but the values have not.
Do I have any regrets?
Not one.
Business is never easy. There will always be setbacks, challenges and moments when giving up feels like the sensible option. But if you believe in what you are doing, sometimes the only thing you can do is keep getting back up.
Twenty years later, we are still standing, still growing and still excited about what comes next.
Thank each and everyone of you for the support you have shown us over the last 20 years, you are truly amazing.
