It was lovely seeing so many new and regular locals at the Pembroke Country Market yesterday. We also met a lot of holidaymakers who enjoyed looking around the market and buying some great items to bring back home with them. It was so nice to meet a family from Somerset who saw one of our posts on Facebook recently 😀
Our customers, local and from away, mean so much to us, and we have some great chats with all 😀 We pride ourselves on being friendly and welcoming to everyone 😊

The Watermans Arms made a really good point about local businesses sharing and supporting each other.

Working together will always be better than fighting alone.

As a simple idea, if your business links naturally with another nearby business, why not give them a mention in your posts?

If you bake bread, mention the local butcher, grocer, cheese shop or farm shop that sells something lovely to go with it.

If you run a café, tag the florist who supplies your flowers, the local artist whose work is on your walls, or the shop next door that customers might enjoy visiting after lunch.

If you sell gifts, mention a nearby coffee shop where people can stop afterwards. If you are a hairdresser, recommend a local beauty salon, nail technician or boutique. If you are a tradesperson, give a shout-out to another trusted local business you work alongside.

It costs nothing to support each other, but it can make a real difference.

Sharing local charities and community groups also demonstrates community spirit. Try it.

A share, a tag, a recommendation or a kind word can help another local business reach new customers, and they may do the same for you.

Working together works.

Whether you fancy a castle concert, a wildflower walk, a beachside community project or something a little different, there is plenty to explore. The Pembrokeshire flag: The story behind the county’s colours

Pembrokeshire’s county flag is more than a bright design flown at events, businesses and public buildings. Behind its blue, gold, green and red sits a story of local identity, Welsh heritage, coastal pride and one of the most famous royal connections in British history.

The flag is made up of a blue background crossed by a gold St David’s cross. At its centre is a green five-sided shield shape containing a red and white Tudor rose. At first glance it is a bold and simple design, but each part of the flag has a clear meaning linked to Pembrokeshire’s landscape and history.

The gold cross is based on the flag of St David, the patron saint of Wales. This is especially fitting for Pembrokeshire, as St Davids, Britain’s smallest city, lies within the county and has been a place of Christian worship for around 1,500 years. The use of St David’s cross gives the flag a strong Welsh identity without simply repeating the more familiar red dragon.

The blue background represents the sea, which has shaped Pembrokeshire for centuries. From Milford Haven Waterway to Fishguard, Tenby, St Davids, Pembroke Dock and the county’s many harbours, islands and beaches, the sea is central to Pembrokeshire’s economy, culture and sense of place. The blue also reflects the county’s long maritime history, from fishing and trade to ferry routes, tourism and coastal communities.

The green central shape represents Pembrokeshire’s land, fields and cliffs. While the county is often celebrated for its coastline, it is also a rural county of farms, lanes, hedgerows, hilltops and cliff paths. The green symbol helps balance the design by recognising both land and sea.

At the centre of the flag is the Tudor rose, a direct reference to Henry Tudor, later King Henry VII, who was born at Pembroke Castle in 1457. His rise to the throne after the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 marked the beginning of the Tudor dynasty, one of the most significant periods in British history. By placing the Tudor rose at the heart of the flag, Pembrokeshire’s connection to this national story is placed firmly in view.

The modern Pembrokeshire flag has its roots in the 1970s, during a period of major local government change. In 1974, Pembrokeshire was merged with Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire to form the administrative county of Dyfed. Although the historic county of Pembrokeshire did not disappear from people’s hearts or maps, the change led to a renewed desire to express Pembrokeshire’s distinct identity.

The flag was developed by local figures including Peter Stock, Dewi Pritchard, Jim Brock and Marjorie Jacobs. It later gained wider recognition through local use and was formally dedicated at Pembroke Castle on 28 July 1988. That location was no accident. Pembroke Castle, birthplace of Henry VII, provided a powerful setting for a flag that links the county’s local pride with its wider historical importance.

The flag’s meaning can be read in layers. It says Pembrokeshire is Welsh through the St David’s cross. It says Pembrokeshire is coastal through the blue field. It says Pembrokeshire is rural and scenic through the green centre. It says Pembrokeshire has national historic importance through the Tudor rose.

It can also be seen as a quiet statement of county pride. Designed in the years after Pembrokeshire was absorbed into Dyfed, the flag became a way of saying that Pembrokeshire’s identity had not gone away. Administrative boundaries may change, but local history, culture and belonging are harder to erase.

From a design point of view, the flag works because it is easy to recognise. The gold cross stands out strongly against the blue, while the central rose gives it a feature that is unique to Pembrokeshire. The Tudor rose is more detailed than many modern flag designs, but it earns its place because of the county’s direct link to Henry VII and Pembroke Castle.

Today, the Pembrokeshire flag is increasingly seen as a symbol of local pride. It appears at community events, civic occasions and in local displays. For many, it represents not only the county’s past, but also the modern Pembrokeshire of coastal towns, rural communities, tourism, farming, ports, small businesses and strong local identity.

In simple terms, the Pembrokeshire flag tells the county’s story in colour: the saint, the sea, the land and the Tudor king.

It is a reminder that Pembrokeshire is not just a place on the edge of Wales. It is a county with its own voice, its own history and a flag that says, very clearly, “we are still here.”
