It was one of those days that truly meant everything to me.I got to bring together two of the most important parts of my life – being a mam and being a community champion.
For those who don’t know, my son (now 10!) was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes during the COVID lockdown in 2020, when he was just 4 years old. Since then, we’ve ridden the rollercoaster of highs and lows – quite literally – and learned so much along the way.
What really stood out over the years is this: so many people have heard of diabetes, but not many truly understand what living with it looks like day to day. In those early days, before insulin pumps, when we had to inject insulin manually, we faced stares… and sometimes even negative comments. All because people didn’t understand why a child needed an injection before eating.
That’s why today meant so much.
I had the opportunity to work alongside MTV, Kyle Christie from Geordie Shore – who also lives with Type 1 diabetes –to help educate school children. We spoke about what diabetes is, how to spot the signs of high and low blood sugar, and what to do in an emergency. We also shared early symptoms to look out for, in the hope that one day, that knowledge could help someone get diagnosed sooner and avoid becoming seriously unwell.
It was such a special experience being able to turn our journey into something positive– helping others understand, raising awareness, and empowering the next generation
If today taught me anything, it’s that awareness truly matters… and education can make all the difference.
