Like our native social wasps, the invasive Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina) may be seen in the UK during late summer and early autumn as it searches for sugar-rich liquids to feed on.

The Asian Hornet may be confused with our native European Hornet (Vespa crabro), but there are a few crucial differences:

🐝The Asian Hornet:
✅Is smaller than our native hornet
✅Has an orange head from the front
✅Has a dark abdomen, with fine yellow stripes and a yellow or orange 4th segment near the base
✅Has a black or brown thorax (middle body segment)
✅Has legs with yellow tips

Asian Hornet numbers are on the rise in the UK, presenting a significant threat to native pollinator species and our ecosystems. If you spot an Asian Hornet, be sure to report the sighting ➡️ https://bit.ly/4cj2cvj
