What a joy to have the amazing Maggie O'Farrell with us today talking about her beautiful book, Land with Fiona Nisbet.

Land was inspired by the discovery that her Great-great Grandfather was cartographer to the British as they mapped the Irish landscape in the aftermath of the Great Famine.

It is a beautifully crafted, deeply layered exploration of family history and trauma.

The audience greatly enjoyed O'Farrell's stories of how the novel came to be but also a wee sneak peek into her Oscar experience with Hamnet!

Kim’s Cheese of the Moment

This beautiful Cornish Yarg is wonderfully buttery and crumbly with citrus notes.
What makes the Yarg so unique is its nettle-wrapping. Coming from a 17th Century recipe, this cheese hails from Lynher Dairies in Ponsanooth, Cornwall and it is just fabulous!

The other cheeses featured in this post are Wigmore (creamy and soft), Durrus (milky and buttery) and Ducketts Caerphilly (hints of raw mushroom give way to a creamy curd with a clean fresh flavour).

A huge thank you to the amazing Douglas Stuart for his warm, funny and insightful conversation with about his new book, John of John.

They discussed the complex relationship between father and son, between sexuality and religion and how secrets held from loved ones can change the course of a life.

The audience fell quiet as Stuart read a passage about the beauty of weaving using colours of the Harris landscape and the warmth and distance that resides between Cal and his father. A reading about textiles couldn't have been more perfect for the Borders!
