It's nice to have flowers around the edges of the polytunnels. Grateful too for the rain!

The wet meadow is changing daily. It will soon be full of purple knapweed. The marbled white butterflies usually appear soon after. Exciting times for butterfly fans - we don't see that very often around this part of the North York Moors (tho that had been changing over the last 10 years as populations spread north and breed on favourable sites like this one.)

Okay okay, so this is the world's worst video but if you watch closely you can see the many tiny insects over the ponds as well as 3 pairs of broad-bodied chasers, lots of damselflies and a pair of swallows on the deep pond. I scared the heron off unfortunately. Making a natural clean-water pond is a slow process and without the usual planting you might do, it can look a bit sketchy for a while. Waiting for the right plants to colonise this area is sometimes annoying, but the wildlife doesn't seem to think so.

Triangle field is filling with flowers. There are insects everywhere, lots of butterflies: painted ladies, blues and small coppers. Many moths as well and the lovely yellowhammers in full voice. Meadows are wonderful!

Natural history lessons in Sloping Field. The transformation from grazed upland to fledgling woodland is happening. The extensive Bracken bashing we’ve been carrying out is helping the flora to spread and new areas of bluebells and stitchwort have emerged this year. The scrub is providing safe places for newly germinated trees to grow up and get away from hungry deer.

The first dragonflies of the year are out. The broad bodied chasers are so hard to capture with a phone! It is so good to see after an almost total absence last year.

If we could, we'd just create more and more meadows. Very happy to see the Ragged Robin spreading. Children love flowers and long grass, there's just so much to see and find and do.
