Bank holidays tend to follow a familiar pattern.

Make plans.
Change the plans.
Hope the weather holds.
Open the fridge and build lunch from whatever looks promising.

Luckily, a good wedge of Barber's is one of those ingredients that works with just about anything - sandwiches, picnics, cheeseboards or the classic “slice while deciding what to cook”.

Seven generations later, we can confirm: cheddar is always a reliable part of a good, long weekend.

We love sharing photos of our herds grazing in the lush green fields of Somerset and Dorset, but this is the reality we’re facing this summer.

A patchwork of drought impacted sun scorched fields. So our herds are being nurtured with shade and being fed inside using grass ensiled earlier in the season, with access to the fields later in the day when its cooler. The pasture may be parched and dry, but the cows still like the opportunity to go outside.

We work with nature and care deeply for our land so seeing our fields struggle affects us, our cows, and our local ecosystems.

Generations of farming families have faced continual weather challenge, but their resilience, resolve and adaptability across all seasons to help ensure our cows remain happy and healthy is certainly being tested during this drought.

Summer not only brings warmth and longer days on the Barber's farms, it also shows off Mother Nature in all her vivid beauty.

The colours of flora and fauna in the summer are as unique and as special as the cheese we produce, and are the very reason we care for the land as well as we care for our cows.

We take our environmental custodianship very seriously, highlighting why we have been 'ahead of the herd' since 1833.
