The overseeding was a success. I was worried when we did it if it would just grow dandelions. We had out wintered some heifers on this field till march then harrowed and broadcast some seed on. Its come good in end this is a very light soil field. I don't think it would have worked as well if we had a dry time. Its a field that burns up bad but reacts fast to rain.

More mowing today. After the rain yesterday I questioned if was doing right. Honestly can't tell it rained. Some good crops considering its either been grazed once and some twice. The difference in years when actually get the rain at right times. Still got about 18 acres left before knocking of tonight.
I really enjoy mowing just doesn't agree with having Hay-fever 🫣🤣 i try not to leave the tractor cab

The lads are turning into some nice cattle, been an accidental beef farmer isn't cheap. Let's hope July's tb test is clear and normal service is resumed. Back to full-time dairy farmers.

We've attracted a few new followers, which we appreciate alot, so we thought it would be nice to introduce ourselves and try explain abit about who we are and what we do. Myself James and vicky and our 4 kids harry, lucy, Joseph and daisie. We milk 120 cross bred grazing sort cows, friesian cross jersey is the main cross. We aim for as much milk from forage as possible and they are all block calved in a 12 week block from the start of July. We rear all our own replacements and have been a closed herd for a good number of years now. Unfortunately shut with tb so turned into accidental beef farmers 🫣. We are tenant farmers but managed to buy 17 acres 6 years ago.

Only 54 milking now and going less day by day, we remember getting 54 when we were getting going. Seems a life time ago now. Soon be down into the 30s milking we normally milk through the dry period with a few cows as something always calves early. The bulk tank we have to switch to pulse cooling ( so it comes on and off and cools the milk slower) or the milk freezes to the sides as there not enough in it really 🫣. Trouble with having efficient equipment when on low volume.

Then vicky made homemade scotch eggs look at the colour in that yoke, you wouldn't get that out a supermarket. Proper eggs from our own hens 👌

We've some chickens available. When we were looking for chickens for the kids we struggled to finds some locally. So after some googling we found a hatchery so ordered 60. The kids want to keep some but do have about 50 available. If anyone is interested please message us. If not we'll go crazy into selling eggs again 🫣.

They are all hybrid laying hens, they'll be about 16 weeks old this week. Odds ones or groups all ok

We've Sussex, cou-cou, BBF(lavender), white leg horns, medics and cuivree they are all different hybrids. Have a look at the pictures we've put on we've put the names of each type by there pictures.

This field was reseeded in autumn 2024. It saved us last year with the drought it had a very good first and second cut. Its come with some spear thistles this year. We are pre mowing everything at the moment anyway so should control the thistles with cutting them off low. We prefer pre mowing to topping as its a low clean cut before the cows have 💩 all over it too. A topper we do have one isn't designed to go as low and on these thistles would only chop the top of them giving them more chance of coming back. Controlling before the thistles flower is a must to stop spreading the seed.

Waiting to mow again, just need a break in the weather. So catching up with other jobs, mucked the bulls out, more pre mowing and more cows dried off. Its nice having quicker milkings but it'll be nice to see the litres rise again. We've watched the first 4 episodes of Clarksons farm. With out giving too much away we think its brilliant especially the trip abroad.
