TREASURE FOUND ON OUR LAND
A seal matrix was found four years ago on our land at Happisburgh by a detectorist with permission to detect there.
The silver seal matrix would have been used for creating wax seal imprints and dates back to the 14th century.
It is considered particularly opulent and has a hexangonally faceted conical handle rising to a triple-ridged collar. The circular die has a central motif of a quatrefoil containing the final word of an inscription on a round cross with rounded ends.
The entire inscription is written in Lombardic script, an extinct west Germanic language, and reads “SIGILLVM IOhIS DE BAnhAM” meaning “Seal of John of Banham”.
This has left experts baffled as Happisburgh is 40 miles away from the south Norfolk village of Banham which appears to be the residence of the original owner.
Norfolk’s senior coroner, Jacqueline Lake, concluded that the item constitutes potential treasure under the Treasure Act 1996 as it is made of more than 10pc precious metal and is more than 300 years old.
A G Meale & Sons Ltd have waived their reward for the silver seal matrix and the matrix is now with Norwich Castle Museum as part of their medieval seal matrix collection.
