SOUTH AFRICA DECLARES BRAAI ITS OFFICIAL NATIONAL MEAL

SWANSEA, WALES – 3 August 2026

Researchers have finally settled one of South Africa's longest-running debates after discovering that almost every meal eventually becomes... a braai.

The investigation began when a foreign visitor innocently asked:

"What's the traditional South African Sunday roast?"

Without hesitation, several locals replied:

"A braai."

Further questioning produced even more surprising results.

"What's for lunch?"
"Braai."

"What do you serve at birthdays?"
"Braai."

"Christmas?"
"Braai."

"New Year's?"
"Braai."

Researchers believed they had reached the end of the investigation until they asked one final question:

"What do South Africans eat for breakfast?"

A smiling local replied:

"Last night's braai."

Scientists have now confirmed that no matter the occasion, weather forecast, or day of the week, South Africans will always find a perfectly reasonable excuse to light the fire.

BREAKING NEWS: South Africans Officially Advised to Be More Specific About Their "Bakkie"

A nationwide communication review has concluded that the phrase "Where's my bakkie?" is no longer considered clear enough for everyday conversation.

The recommendation follows a growing number of incidents where South Africans have responded to the same question in completely different ways.
In one reported case, a family member asked, "Has anyone seen my bakkie?"

One relative immediately walked outside.

Another began searching every kitchen cupboard.

Witnesses confirmed that both individuals were genuinely trying to help.

The misunderstanding was only resolved several minutes later when the owner clarified, "The one with yesterday's braai leftovers."
Language experts have since recommended that all South Africans specify either "Hilux bakkie" or "Tupperware bakkie" when making enquiries, particularly during family gatherings, after a braai, or on Monday mornings.

A spokesperson for the investigation said there is no fault with the South African vocabulary.
"We've simply reached the point where context is as important as the question itself."

Further guidance is expected after researchers complete their investigation into whether someone asking for chips expects Simba, slap chips, or hot chips.
