A happy New Year to all of our customers.

We just wanted to update you all, that with a heavy heart we have decided to close the smoky barrel permanently and cease trading, including our web shop and markets, once our current stock is sold. We have tried our very best but are being realistic about the future of the business.

The last Year has been incredibly tough, and a real challenge to keep prices affordable. Beef has risen by around 30% alone, and this as our core business, as well as packaging and all other associated costs no longer make it viable, as there is a ceiling on what we can charge for what is essentially a luxury, nice to have treat, not a staple day to day food.

Since we started in 2017, we feel we have achieved our aim of providing sustainably and ethically produced real beef jerky. We have seen our jerky been taken on expeditions to Everest, round the world sailing competitions, winning awards and even been on the BBC! As well as meeting a lot of lovely people of course.

All existing subscriptions will be honoured and we are always contactable via E-mail at

We just wanted to wish a merry Chrismas & happy new Year to all our customers, thanks for your support during what has been a challenging Year for the smokehouse.

We will be processing our last orders on the 12/12/25 (next Friday) to ensure all meet the last posting date for second class of the 17/12/25. We will be closing down the smokehouse from 17/12/25 - 05/01/15 for a well deserved break. . No orders will be processed during this time. Thanks again!

We are delighted to say we are back at the Ulverston Dickensian festival this weekend! As well as our usual jerky, smoked cashews and rubs & seasonings.
We have two special flavours; Whisky infused venison jerky and our famous Naga jerky, come and say hello for a sample :)

Due to the awful weather forecast at Rheged (just in time for the weekend of course!) We want to announce that we will unfortunately not be attending. We hope to see all of our lovely customers at Kendal farmers market on the 11th July :)

For the last few Months we have been carrying out Top-secret taste testing trials here at the smokehouse. Our army of willing volunteers have provided huge amounts of feedback, and feel that we have finally arrived at a flavour that provides a manageable heat with a flavour to get your taste buds tingling!

As you may know, Naga Jolokia (Ghost pepper); one of the hottest
chillis in the world! Scoville Rating: Up to 1,000,000 SHU (Scoville
Heat Units) so it packs quite a punch

It's a great jerky to eat on its own or include in cooking for extra meaty, protein and hot flavours; the Naga delivers an intense, lingering heat that leaves a lasting impression on the palate.

It' s smoky undertones and fruity flavour profile add depth to dishes, making it a favourite among spice enthusiasts and adventurous
cooks alike.

The question is, can you take the heat?!

A bit of a late post but it was another busy weekend for the smoky barrel! Two days at Countryfest 25, this time accompanied by Tommy who grafted hard and kept on smiling through the rain and wind (unlike me!) kindly popped in and took this exciting footage of Dad and lad busy behind the stall.
