I've always said that our Johann was the better driver so on 30th April 1996, when our Majella wrote the family car off in Ballycastle, it wasn't a big surprise. But her timing was impeccable because on 1st May 1996, Rose and I took over The Golden Plough, at the ripe age of 42 and 45. We were complete novices and hadn't a clue what we were doing. We did know however, that we wanted to serve the local community and provide a friendly and helpful service.
This Friday, 26th April 2024, 28 years later, with very very heavy hearts, Rose and I will pull The Plough's shutters down for the final time.
We have seen some changes in our time there. You used to be able to buy 10 Regal. Now you need a loan to buy 20. Everything used to be cash. Now it's all plastic. 10p mix ups used to be 10p. Now they're a £1. You could have filled your car up and it would have lasted a fortnight. Now we can't afford to fill it up. We survived a pandemic. We are in the midst of a cost of living crisis. But The Plough remains a solid. It has been a constant in so many people's lives.
Rose and I would like to thank you all for your custom, your support and your loyalty throughout the years. We must also thank Irene, Iris, Karen and Conan for all their years of dedication and commitment and Irene's early morning starts. Thank you.
We would also like to take this opportunity to wish the new proprietors, Brian and Julie, every success and happiness in their new venture. The Golden Plough will be open as normal on Saturday.
Friends have been made and friends have passed. Laughs a plenty and many a tear shed. But now it's time for me and Rose to have a wee rest.
