This winter has been a very hard year for many honey bees up and down the country . We are hearing first hand of so many colony deaths probably due to the extremely wet and damp Autumn and Winter.. bees can handle cold but damp can be fatal.

Thankfully our Native British Honey Bees at the Burghley Estate in Stamford are adapted to the unusual weather patterns and have come through fantastically well.

They have already started brooding and the colonies are building up nicely. This frame shows wall to wall brood from one such colony .

All ready to take advantage of early season crops next as they come into flower.

There is a real advantage in having adapted stock and Native British Honey Bees are as adopted as they come.

At Bees and Co we only have AMM stock and rear our own to keep this line as pure as possible.

Some queen cells are just so well hidden...

When checking for queen cells during swarming season, remember to also check the queen excluder. Here the bees have created a viable queen cell with a nice larvae at the bottom of the excluder.

No wonder sometimes swarms are lost even though a thorough check if the brood box is done.

Busy Burghley Bees bringing in the Ivy.

The large yellow pollen baskets show our lovely bees collecting the last of the pollen for the year. Ivy is such a great plant for many pollinating plants and provides a great source of food for our native pollinators when nothing else is around.

After the ivy the bees usually stay inside for the winter slowly eating their collected stores.

Just one of our lovely dark native British honey bee queen's. Lovely and gentle and productive. Working hard to pollinate the surrounding trees, flowers, fruits, vegetables and crops around the Stamford, Burghley Estate grounds.

We might even be able to harvest some lovely honey. Thank you bees.

Great weather, lovely students and pleasant bees. What more could we ask for. Our students had an amazing time learning about handling bees, health, disease, swarming, feeding and supering to name but a few.

They are now ready to manage their own colonies and I'm sure they will go on to be competent beekeepers.
