How many people actually know a farmer these days?
One of the biggest failings in our food system is the disconnect it has created between farmers and consumers.
Most of the food produced on UK farms today ends up on a supermarket shelf, often hundreds of miles from its source. An invisible wall has been built between the farmers that produced it and the people who buy it and eat it. As a result, most people have no idea where their food really came from, or how it was produced.
So how can people possibly understand and value the work and the care a farmer puts into producing meat, milk, vegetables, eggs, or other food, when the individual farmers can no longer be identified?
When you buy direct from a farmer you can get to know them and you can ask questions about how they farm, the crops they grow, the animals they keep. This means you can make more informed choices and directly support the kind of farms you want to support.
Produce & Provide believes that every farmer deserves recognition for the work they do and food they produce. Whether they sell at the farm gate or supply a major supermarket. Every farmer has a name and they should not be anonymous in our food system.
Farmers must take the initiative and use every opportunity to engage with the public. Together we can establish those connections between farmers and consumers that are vital to safeguarding the future of British farming, our food choices and food security.
