I honestly cannot believe I’m even having to write this… Earlier this evening we had a man come onto our property and attempt to steal our hive full of bees.
Yes, actual bees.
This person turned up just wearing shorts and a T-shirt, and started dismantling one of our hives that was FULL of live bees, clearly intending to take the colony. It was one of the most bizarre, reckless and upsetting things we have ever witnessed.
Anyone who knows anything about beekeeping will understand how dangerous and irresponsible this is, not only for himself but for the bees as well. These are living creatures that we care for, protect and work hard to maintain. A hive is not just a box you can pick up and walk away with!
To see someone trespass onto our property and start pulling apart a hive as if it was theirs to take is honestly shocking. Thankfully the situation was stopped before more damage was done, but we are still completely stunned that someone would think this was acceptable behaviour.
Please keep an eye out locally and if anyone has seen suspicious activity on their properties / apiaries. Sadly it seems nothing is off limits anymore.
To our fellow beekeepers - please stay vigilant, secure your hives where possible, and keep an eye on your hives / apiaries.
